Darn it. I missed out the Why, so there goes that idea. I can't think of any where-fives or what-fives..

I love your shrug. That's called 'creationism' I think. As for the who where what and when - perhaps we can make that into a synonym and call it the......the where-fours? Or the what-fours? But you are right with the shrug, otherwise we would all go insane trying to figure it out - or...or become religious??

I think the same reason is behind most of our celebrations, mneme, either a change of seasons or a decision that we've gone too long without a party and it's time to let our hair down and get sozzled - Hic!

Trying to draw a shrug... ~|~
I waver between "dying of curiousity" about who, what, when, where, why did all the universe and everyting happen, and resignation that it will never be absolutely clear and understood...

children get it, don't they?.. I think your reference to the return of longer daylight hours is part of the answer as to why the Church chose this date to celebrate, symbolically, Christ's birth - fresh hope, new beginnings....rebirth of the sun.. you can see how apparently irreconcilable ideas can harmonise. Interesting thoughts:)

The Winter Solstice sounds about right to me, mneme. If I were a pagan ((please note the 'if') I would be celebrating the return of longer daylight hours. I attended the Christmas Eve church service last night with all the candles and carols and children agog with wonder. Me? I'm still wondering. One little boy said it all last night when the lights were switched off during part of the service - he said, very loudly - Oh!-Oh!

Thank you for your kind thoughts, good Sir. That's probably what caused the big bang - a higher entity overheated their microwave oven.

you've been at the egg-nog.. but seriously - time to put the Christ back into Christmas, for sure. I have these arguments with my mother in almost every hour-long phone call; December 25th is a pagan festival, and so on.. it's good to strike a balance between bah-humbug and over-indulgence, and as symbolic dates go, mid-winter is fine with me. The kids next door have loved it; mine are too old for Santa Claus (sigh). Happy days..

johmcnab, Definitely the big bang. I guess the proof was microwaves,
thought to be residue. Well, anyway, in religion we talk about faith, so we take the leap of faith that God put his spirit into the process, whether it was evolution of the big bang.
Merry Christmas to you kind sir. Glad to see you up and a-blogging.
