I met Jean in 1988 during a conference in Seattle, Washington, where grass-roots Republicans from seven northwestern states were able to meet one-on-one with the various Republican presidential contenders. Jean took a particular liking to my then spouse, Christine. I met and spent quite some time with then Vice-president George H.W. Bush. I decided that the best possible ticket would be Bush and Kirkpatrick, and I actually discussed this at some length with the Vice-president.

Obviously, he ended up not heeding my advice – to the country's detriment, I believe. In any case, I greatly admired Jean and her uncompromising stance for things right. I mourn her passing.
