Geez I am so glad I never picked up the habit of smoking!
it is cleverly written, and you draw sympathy from me as you puff away on a dirty fag, it is the words that do that to me. A feeling of defeat each time you smoke, how awful. Some addicitions are more visible than others, but don't be fooled, there are others well-hidden vices everywhere, cigarette being the least of these. Just trying to put a perspective on things, not condoning or condemning either.

We can be our own worst enemy when it comes to vices – an enemy by succumbing to the vice and an enemy in blaming ourselves for our weakness.  I’m a smoker, by the way, but Shhhh, don’t tell anyone.

Noncon (is there a more acceptable abbreviation?!) and Star 4you

Thanks - yes, they come fairly easily, but at the price of being, arguably, lowbrow. I say arguably, because i would like to think that there are deep things hinted at here and there, and we shouldn't be ashamed of accessibility. Without that, why bother. Poems are to be read and understood, I think. I think of these sonnets as a sort of diary. But in doing so, others must be able to identify with what I'm saying, or I have failed.

Star - yes, you have a good point. I suppose I may be addicted without realising it, although I can and do go through every single day at work completely without cigarettes, and most weeks manage to keep it down to 10 cigarettes total. At other times I manage to go for weeks without. But although I believe it's not the nicotine I crave, I do enjoy the smoking experience. Why? Well, that's what I ponder in the poem.

I find all your poems so good....
...they are very cleverly written yet give the impression of being written easily. I'm sure you could get a poetry book published! (I do of course realise how that is not easy!)

Thanks!
Very kind of you all to say so. Are there some others in the same boat out there?
