That friend -more Ell's friend than mine - doesn't even know I do write.

JohnMcNab, does that friend NOT want you to write????????????????????????
I think not so much an automaton but something which does not require digging deep. Answering calls would be about the worst job in the world for creativity.

Azur

An alternative job would have to be one you can do as if you were an automaton.  This will give you time to ponder and create.  A job like...grass cutting?  Pool skimming?  Wal-Mart greeter?

A friend is trying to persuade me to work in a call centre.  She thinks this will be mindless, but knowing me, I'd try too hard to fix the customer's problem.

I remember when I used to personal train. I had no motivation left for myself when it came time to workout. I can identify with this completely.

Hmmm. It's hard to give advice in this area. I do outside work to augment our income. It's difficult but pays really well.

Maybe you should try looking for an alternative job you can do. The suggestions below are excellent.

I have no experience at professional writing, Azur, but it seems logical
that you would be dipping into the same well to teach writing and to write yourself and draining it a little.

It's funny how it needs to be something away from writing

Mademoiselle, good point
I think that other kinds of jobs can offer food for thought for the writer and you're right, the interaction is a great thing.

Love the quote on your comment today

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions, Azur,
I would hope you wouldn't have to go the route that I did in order to get some peace and  quiet to write, it's a wee bit hard on the nerves.  I hope you find something that suits you, though, and lets you find time for creativity.

I don't have much experience with working,

However, if I had to, I think I'd aim for something in sales. You get to perfect your conversational skills while interacting with a wide variety of individuals. Surely, there must be some value in that (for a writer).

If I ever get real rich,
I hope I'm not real mean to poor people,
like I am now.
