Its largely an individual thing.
I once read some good advice on this subject that I happen to agree with ... "Don't listen to writers talk about writing or themselves". I don't remember who said it now.
But, the point is ... some people can be very discouraging. They will have you believe that if you don't wake up at 3AM every morning and write, you are not a *legitimate* writer.
My opinion ... if you write because you enjoy writing, but it is the truest and most natural output of your heart and soul ... you are a writer.
There is no other qualification ...
Now, sales ... that's a whole other gameplan. Convincing a large proportion of the general public to enjoy what you write almost as much as you do ... that's a task not for the faint of heart.
