This sounds similar to the email scam
That claims someone wants to give you money, etc... they ask for things like a copy of your passport, etc...

Yeah, there are a lot of scams similar to this.
I have never heard of anyone doing what you have though

Mostly we just toss the emails or letters out... (Ignore ANYTHING from Nigeria. It's a scam)

You're probably lucky
your bank was cautious. Eventually they'll round up all the bad guys and you could have been one of them.
