This made me smile in a number of ways
the six pack for one. You are a better writer than you know but don't let that stop you keep working

She certainly has, jacenta.  Being involved in each other's hobbies makes life more interesting.

It is great that you and Ell support each other in your interests.  PostSmile! It is so obvious that Ell has your best interest at heart.

That is love and loyalty to the nth degree, bel.  Congratulations.  It must be good for the ego to know that you are better than Hemingway and King and that they both suck.

Of course let her read it!

My husband once told me I was better than Hemingway.  Mind you he didn't know what he was reading was Hemingway at the time.  He picked up something I had printed off and thought it was some work I was proof reading for a friend.  When all was said and done, I laughed my butt off as he told me.  "You write WAY better than that!"

"It's Hemingway Honey."

"I don't care if it's Stephen King, your writing is better!"

See why I love him??

Touche, Blanche.  TBD?

Pat_B
Thank you for your input, Pat_B - which reminds me I still have to find time to read your latest fiction post.  I have over 70,00 words written; 35,000 of which I am reasonably happy with, and may not edit anymore.

Ah, I see, John, it's still TBD?

The cryptic note was a reply to your comment about my not leaving in August, and it was just a reminder that August hasn't ended yet.  Sorry for the confusion, Blanche.

JohnMcNab, I just saw your comment to me, and I have to say, "Huh?"
I'm scratching my head over your cryptic note.  (and yes, Dave Barry's got nothin' on you).

Well, I'm sorry I wasn't in on this conversation earlier,
because it's very absorbing.  I'm voting with Azur and Blanche and everyone who says "YES" let Ell read at least the first chapter.  A) she's a reader and knows what's what, and 2) she'll give you honest feedback, which is exactly what you need when you're working through a big piece of work.  The thing is, you'd better have the next chapter ready if she really likes the first one... :)

Blanche!....Ahem!....Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November..  All the rest have 31 excepting February alone which has 28 days clear and 29 on each leap year.  I forgot to thank you for having me and Dave Barry in the same sentence.  Really heady stuff.

JohnMcnab, I look forward to future posts, you alarmed me with your comment
that you were thinking of leaving in August.  I hope net.  Your posts on your swimming lessons, and on Ell keep me in stitches.

But we swear at her in a loving way, Blanche.   The stupid mutt thinks we are being nice to her.  Your comments about Ell being the butt of jokes made me think, and it may lead to a post.  Thank you for the vote of confidence, Blanche.

JohnMcnab, I think you underrate yourself, published or no, you're still a

good writer and you've talked about your writing credits before, so I don't think I'm wrong in putting you an Azur in the same category of professinals.  As for writng about Ell, Dave Barry's done some funny stuff, but you know your spouse and how much she'll stand for in being made the butt of the joke, or maybe that's not the right way to put it. It's more loving than that, but the vignettes of the two of you are pretty funny.

Swearing at Samantha? Forshame, a dog's gotta do what a dog's gotta do.

BrightIrish
I have decided to let her read a chapter, BrightIrish, but I'm plucking up the courage and wondering when I should do it.  Maybe I should get her drunk first?

Johnmcnab
Hi .. Yes, you should let Ell read a chapter.. I think you will be pleasently surprised!

Thanks BlackPearl.  This week, sometime, perhaps, I will bite the bullet and ....well, I'll think about it

Original Influence
I was thinking about that, Original and it dawned on me that it is of no consequence who is the better writer.  She is the one who writes the best sellers -  period.

I say go for it... As they say, strike while the iron's hot!
I'll bet you really do have some good work.  Your stories on Blogit are good, so I'm going from that.  But this lady knows you and believes in you.  Do your thing.  You'll probably find her opinion really valuable.  Good luck.  :)

Definitely let her read it. She is probably right though,
you most likely are a better writer~!

FactorFiction
That was what the Patricia Cornwell book was like.  I read it yesterday and near the end the author simply gave a list of clues which had miraculously been solved as if she couldn't be bothered having the hero discover them for himself.

posted by johnmacnab on July 31, 2006 at 12:32 PM | link to this | reply

Hmm I'd wager you write better than Tami Hoag.
I reaad one book by her and won't read another. It was great. Great writing suspenseful, etc. I thought it was a great read UNTIL I realized that she had no solution to the plot! Just left me high and dry at the end, thinking, "Hell, I could write a great mystery if I did not have to solve it!"

Ooops!  I forgot to thank you for your compliment about my writings about Ell.   I've been thinking lately of doing a funny current affairs article per week just to see if I can do it, and I may just manage to put Ell in - if she'll let me.

Blanche

Be my guest, Blanche, but I think you have one thing wrong.  Azur is the professional and she talks shop.  Me?  I write as a hobby and now and again I get something published.  I think the last thing was two years ago.  But I have just sent a CD with photographs and details of an idea to a old associate of mine back in Scotland.  If he is for it, it will be hard work but it might make money.

Why Ell puts up with me writing and wasting time I'll never know, but then I  support her when she goes to auctions and with her online shop.  Apart from that, we sit side by side swearing at the computers - and Samantha as she licks her butt.

JohnMcNab, it's interesting kibbitzing on you and Azur talk shop,
about how revamping old pieces just doesn't work for you, it's got to be fresh.  I love your pieces on Ell. Did you bait the hook you were fishing for a compliment on?  Seriously, though, it's wonderful that she appreciates and supports your writing.  She sounds like a discriminating critic.

Azur

I'll take your advice, Azur and print the first chapter off for Ell to read.  However, I'll wait until my other half's flare up has died down round about Thursday.

I find that old articles are just like left overs you put in the fridge and promise to eat - and forget about.  They are the past.  The only thing they are good for is boosting my ego when I sometimes read them and say "Wow! I wrote that?"

posted by johnmacnab on July 30, 2006 at 6:34 PM | link to this | reply

Yes, you could let her read it
People often say about dusting things off and repitching them but it rarely works for me either as most stuff relates to a time and place. I think that works for those general "how to" articles that people sprinkle across the internet.  I know they offer steady work but I can't get my heart into that kind of thing.
