It's part of the holy land, cantey. And Lebanon has a few prestigious
institutes of higher learning, so there's that contingent.  Then there are the businessmen.  None of these people were consulted by the Israelis (or Hezbollah) before the fighting began to see if they objected or if they might wish to cut short their stay in Lebanon.

I don't think this is a case of common sense, Mademoiselle. At any given
moment, a war could break out almost anywhere.  Those tourists and students trapped in Lebanon weren't told before they flew or sailed to that nation that they would be caught up in a war.  Now, if a war had already been going on and these people had decided to enter a war zone, then they would enter at their own risk.  These people didn't ask to be caught up in a war and deserve protection, just as other extranationals are being evacuated by their respective governments.

I disagree ...

If American citizens choose to spend their vacations, or receive their educations, in the Middle East, then they must deal with the potential consequences of their actions.

The government shouldn't automatically be obligated to protect people who lack sufficient common sense.

The Bush administration has been shameful, mysteria, in its neglect of its

Many Americans are in Lebanon, Mademoiselle, as students, tourists,
and working visitors (many of the latter are accompanied by family members).  Then there are the government employees and their families.  Regardless, they all deserve any and all protection our government can give them.

We are taking capitalism, mysteria, to its most depraved and indifferent
limits.  Where's our sense of loyalty, duty, and honor.  These are American citizens in harm's way...

What I want to know is ...

what were all these Americans doing in Lebanon, anyway?

I'm reminded of that Simpsons episode, where Homer gets off the plane in Morocco, takes one look around and says, "Sheesh!  What a dump!  Why would Princess Grace want to live here?"

"Compassionate conservative."
