I've heard all kinds of freaky reasons for people getting married.
One of the most lame, from my son's father.....because he was 35 and his "friends" thought it was a good idea.
Although, that's likely not the truth, and I will never know.  His reasons that he stays married are even lamer than his reasons for getting married.

I guess I will never understand what moves people to be married to someone they don't love.

love?
And a lot of times men marry because its easier than begging to have sex with a woman he figures he will always have a way to get it with a wife, but then the kids come along and kills the sex off, and then he is back to the same old story looking to be sexually fulfilled

Some people conduct successful marriages
that were not built on love. Some men and women settle for that and they make it work.
I have many single female friends who are single precisely because they won't settle and have not found the right person. People often see that as failure.  To me, failure is not being true to yourself. If you can live happily even though the marriage was not a love match there is no harm done.

I Married for Love
As a person involved with conflict resolution, I see many who get into relationships for the wrong reason.  After a while, it gets to a point where hatred enters and it gets bad.  I see women who treat men like dirt, boss them around and just handle them.  The men love them and due to the children remain and take the abuse.  It is awful.  I imagine it happens in the reverse, yet I have not seen it the other way for it appears that there were more males in our family, so we could see the women with wrong motives.  Thought provoking post!

Anyone who allows society to determine their path to happiness partly deserves whatever pain and suffering that results. You should marry a person because you love him/her and want to spend the rest of your life with them. Not for material comfort or to keep up appearances. Garbage in, garbage out. The whole argument that it's society's fault is just a cop-out. Adults should have the courage and common sense not to give in to societal pressures. Those who don't should first blame themselves.
