It's interesting how politicians think of politics; as if they are backyard barbequers bantering about when to turn the steaks over.  Elections have become an afterthought to our elected officials - not good for democracy.

Be well,

I guess you could say that....

smugness has nothing to do with it....i opposed the terrible McCain-Fiengold bill because of this very type of thing......

Stastics are stastics......they show no emotions or smugness...

So, basically you are saying that because of ...
gerrymandering and political contributions, even if the electorate wanted to vote for a change, the power of the incumbent would prevent it from happening??????

No wonder you Republicans are so smug. And yes, you are right, the Democrats are no better.

The length of time between the election and the end of time
will be the determining factor for bringing in the democrats. Oh to think of them brings aching to my weary bones.

cake and vodka
Well, if even if the Democrats win, we will still have something to look forward to ; "COMRADES, AFTER THE REVOLUTION, THERE WILL BE CAKE AND VODKA FOR ALL".

From the Cato Institute:

Incumbents have won more than 98 percent of their races for the U.S. House of Representatives since 1998. The electoral advantages of incumbency have also grown for senators and in state and local elections.

And believe it or not...that has risen faster since the Campaign Finance Reform (also know as the Incumbancy Protection Act) Bill was passed.

Thanks for stopping by.......

A few points ...

~ I agree with you that, while the Democrats winning control appears likely, it's not quite the "done deal" many of their supporters believe.  Besides, it's never a good idea to assume anything in politics (or, even, give the appearance of doing so).

~ I also agree with the Democrats who argue that it isn't necessarily in their best interests, anyway.

I saw on Hardball (at least, I think it was Hardball) that members of congress (from both sides of the aisle) have set an alltime record for missed votes this year.  Their thought process, apparently, being that (in the long run) it would be easier to defend a non vote than an unpopular one to their constituents.

~ 98% of incumbents are reelected?  Really?  Wow.  I knew the number would be high, but not that high.  No wonder so many people support term limits.
