JanesO, Yes my class was empty. It was a long hard day of
Clockwatching. I was relapsing H5N1 by the time I got home. Working doesn't affect me that way.

JanesO, i know. A good night sleep does wonders.
Well as mere mortals we have the opportunity to practice man's highest spiritual achievement: forgiveness.

I think we might get a bill this summer. Then they can build their wall or whatever. After Iraq, Arizona should be easy.

Apology accepted, kingmi, if you think one is required.

I think I probably owe a few myself to a variety of people -- perhaps as well to you.

Isn't it nice to know that rational thinking can prevail after a good night of sleep?

Was your school empty today?

janesO, You mean we aren't supposed to jump to false conclusions about
People?

I'm not sure whether to choke on my saliva or to chuckle in amusement . . .

We are presently in the middle of perpetrating the same crime against Mexican children, as we did for fifty years against African-American children.  Isolation, ignoring, tracking, refusing services to:  all were mistakes that we made under Supreme Court purview.  Get that?  Those were mistakes.  I think we could all agree that they were wrong.  Yet no white people stood up to stop it.

Excuse me?  Refusing services?  I live in Michigan with many Hispanics and have seen no refusal of services.  Our schools provide ESL classes, the local hospital writes off many "bad debts" for all races of non-paying folk,  the medical clinics as I said in Burly's comment section are scrounging for federal grants.  There's a huge Hispanic population that is thriving and reproducing much faster than the Dutch or European population.  Soon the area will be majority Hispanic.  Which should be interesting come Tulip Time and the celebration of the Dutch heritage of this area but hey -- why not!  Life is all about change; I'm sure Hispanics make wonderful Dutch dancers.

Schools with sewers running through the yard, holes in the walls, latrines without doors, water on the floors, no textbooks, no media centers, old desks, broken windows, little or no technological development, academically retarded curriculae designed for students who neither can read nor write well enough to compete with national norms, and are not prepared to respond to any but very low expectations. The schools which are geo-politically located in property-rich areas, always very near to the ghetto areas, are predominantly clean, well-lighted, modern school sites, which do not pose major problems of disrepair, with contemporary media-technology centers, technology for the classrooms, academically challenging curriculae, and students who respond successfully to high expectations.

And whose fault is this in many ways but that of your very own NEA?  Speaking of low expectations?  Dumbing down of curricula? Neglecting the Three Rs in favor of a feel good "I'm OK, You're OK" mentality of passing all students whether they have met the criteria or not?  It's Pres Bush who has spent billions to attempt to improve the schools and the standards, but it's the NEA that has bent over backwards to fight him on his attempts.

That said, there is no excuse for the poor condition of school facilities.  I would like to believe that those are well and truly a thing of the past very soon.

What is shocking is that our present attitude of round them all up (our 11 million Latino undocumenteds) and ship them back to where they came from is fueling this thought pattern.  Hello?

Yes, I concur, that would be a logistical nightmare.

Our (George and me) position is a comprehensive immigration bill that would secure the borders.  Then we would be able to stop the flow of trafficking in drugs and humans.  But you didn't stop to consider that.  You merely felt threatened by my being on the opposite side.  This is called paranoia and has led us into many unnecessary conflicts, both locally and internationally.  It is easy to argue religion and politics.  Alcohol makes it easier because the lines between reality and illusion are so easily crossed while drinking.  Many who argue religion and politics are using alcohol while doing so.  It is boring to me.

Ah ha, lovely, so I (and others, so it would seem from your comment) are both drunk and paranoid.  That's news to me, but thanks so much for pointing it out.  My last glass of wine was about two weeks ago, but then you obviously know more about me than I do, so perhaps I've been drinking ETOH and wasn't aware.  Either way, thanks for being so condescending as to religion, politics and alcohol.  I'm glad to see that someone lives above the morass and has been able to reach such an exhaulted state of understanding.

Were the 22 million Mexican workers that I envision required to pay taxes, buy homes and send their children to decent schools, we would have generated enough taxes from them alone to provide these services.

Great!  I've yet to see any movement towards that but will welcome the time when they can share the burden.  Meanwhile, I'm still in favor of heavily fining those American companies that bring illegals across the border and help contribute to this delinquency on a massive scale.  Oh and by the way, I wonder how much school teachers in Mexico are paid?  You wouldn't mind taking a huge pay cut would you? Or perhaps going without a paycheck now and then? We could just open the borders and make this one grand American country.  And since you're already bilingual, you'd be all set since I'm sure the primary language would eventually be Spanish. By the way, that was not a racist comment, kingmi (since I'm certain you will accuse me of such); rather, it was one of pragmatism.  Open up these borders as would seem to be your preference, and standards of living all across the country will plummet.  Of course, there's something to be said for that; Americans as a whole are far too materialistic, but we wouldn't be for long in this new America!

Your statement of not being against immigration, without considering the question globally, is like the white dominants of the forties and fifties who proclaimed to have very good friends who were negroes, but refused to participate in any social, business, or academic intercourse with them.  You know for the sake of appearances.  We called this type of closet racist a hypocrite in my day.

As I said above, it must truly be nice being so all knowing and in possession of such an exhaulted state of being.  You just made statements of assumption, jumping to conclusions that you know my mind and my heart.  Excellent.  Now, perhaps you can tell me what my work week will look like or what I'll be shelling out for gas tomorrow.  That would be most helpful! Meanwhile, I -- poor sod that I am, a human without such exhaulted knowledge, will go to work tomorrow and spend time with some of my favorite co-workers who happen to be African American.  Ooops, but damn, that blows your theory as to my closet racism, doesn't it? Shucky darn.

The money sent back to Mexico has become the number one cause of the rebounding economy of Mexico.  Have you considered the cost to America were the Mexican economy to not recover?  The entire concept of globalisation depends on each country maintaining its own economy, services and national debt.

You're beginning to sound like a socialist, kingmi.  Spread the wealth, share it with everyone, let's fix everyone else's economy at the expense of ours.   All I was saying was that I think it's appropriate, at the very least, to tax the money sent to Mexico.  Isn't that reasonable?  Citizens pay taxes, shouldn't the undocumented as well?

It is just like a religious person to group together with others who believe the same defensive lies that they tell each other, and then turn on the independent thinkers.   How my writing has sadly changed?  I used to be a nice Republican.  Go on back to political obscurity in your moral majority, please, and let rational people run the government.  I was always a moderate and am to this minute.

"Political obscurity in your moral majority."  Wow, now there's a quotable quote!  You'd better hang onto that one to re-use.  I'm sure it will come in handy and I bet it felt good writing it, too.  Sorry to disappoint you, buddy, but I receive no mail from the Christian Coalition, nor do I support other groups like it.  I know that's such a shock.  And oh, by the way, I'm so thankful to hear that rational people run the government.  I wasn't sure about that, but now I know.   The king has spoken, so it must be true.

Your writing, kingmi, was the epitome of condescension and arrogance.  I hope it gave you pleasure.
