Azur
That possibility hadn't occurred to me, Azur.  Thank you for that optimistic note.

Well perhaps one day she will be returning the compliment

You're quite right, Jo, and it would take me a lifetime to list all the things I've done that I shouldn't have done.

if we were reasonable people

we probably wouldn't do lots and lots of things,

Jo

Pat_B
Thanks Pat.  If only I could leap to the finishing of writing a chapter as fast as I can leap to said conclusion.

Nicely done!
It's true -- we wouldn't be writers if we were reasonable people and looked before we leaped to conclusions. great bittersweet mood.. :)

FactorFiction
A 'real' friend who told it how it was, may be on the way to becoming an 'ex' friend, FactorFiction.  I've never been in that situation either, but I think I would be so busy trying not to hurt my friend's feelings, that I'd let others do the dirty work.

I have always been under the impression that
a real friend would tell it like it is... maybe not AFTER the book has been finalized? Hmm. Not a position I have been in myself...

FactorFiction
I've considered that, FF, but I am always convinced that a friend will keep saying'That's great.' even when it isn't - except Ell of course - mmm.  there's an idea.  Ell as a reviewer??  I'll sleep on that thought.

Oh, I don't know
I think a well-written, thoughtful review might be hard to come by, so why not ask someone who you know to be fair and a good writer? Don't sell yourself short.

Taps
Thank you Taps.  I try to work on the same principle as the 'Antiques Roadshow' does.  When people are being told about the price of their antique, the expert always says....well, if I had this in my shop....on a good day and with maybe a few desperate bidders.....and if you hadn't replaced that chip........it would go for at least....bearing in mind that the market is not too good at the moment....

FactorFiction

Our friend thinks I have good credentials because I used to write the odd comedy skit for BBC radio, and I've had articles published in the local paper which publishes her weekly column.

But I quite agree with you, Whacky.  What's the point of a review if you have to ask for it?  Over the years I've had the odd fan letter for articles I've written, but I didn't ask for them.

ginnie
I think I'm just a retired old duffer, ginnie, who likes to write. I was asked at church on Sunday (we were helping with the after sermon coffee and I'm damned if I know how we got so involved) by one of the other helpers what my hobby was.  I spluttered and hesitated, and was saved by him saying he was a hunter, fisher, and all that jazz and which was I?   Then I just put on my interested face and asked questions.

Blanche
Not quite ignominy, Blanche, but close.  When my younger daughter heard, she burst out laughing and said 'There goes your reputation.'

Johnmcnab
This in itself is great writing.  You had me hanging in there til the end.

hmmm, well if someone wants your review, you
must have some good credentials! I would not ask just anyone to write a review for me...

Aw Mac...
..."tell him it's because he is also a writer"....but you still are!!!

John,
Congratulations, champagne keeps very well fortunately.   From the heights of ecstasy to the despair of ignominy in one post...wait, maybe not quite ignominy just not quite what you'd hoped.  Ah, such is life.
