Jane,
I agree with you.  Excellent post!  Happy Easter!

Burly, I agree --

no longer do people come here to this country and become truly "American."  Now, instead, they come to take advantage of what America has to offer while bringing their own country with them and expecting Americans to adapt to THEIR ways.  But, these people do want to become Americans for the benefits they gain.

It's all about "what's in it for ME!"

ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!

The whole thing here is assimilation! That's what always happened until multi-culturalism came along. Now immigrants are encouraged to bring their own cultures with them and we'll try to accomodate them while they set up ethnic enclaves in our country. They bring their own flags, their own language and their own culture and expect us to accomodate them, instead of the other way around. Either we assimilate them, or we throw them out and either approach is okay with me!

Taps, you've got a very valid point.
It's an extraordinary conundrum.  People come here because they want what we have; however, it could be said that the more people who come here who are at or below the poverty level could also have a profound negative affect on the "American way of life."  Truly a conundrum.  But then again, the focus of life must not be on the attainment of wealth and prosperity, but rather, on how we lived our lives in reaching out to those who so badly need our help.

So kingmi, technically, are you using this term loosely?

that is, anyone born in North, Central or South America is called "American"?

Just curious, and thanks for commenting.

Writersblok, I agree. If we let the 12 million folk who came illegally
become citizens, what message does that give those who came through the proper channels????  Thanks for stopping by.

I'm glad that it is not up to me to make any decisions about any of this because I could never send anyone back home who fit the description you quoted from the Statue of Liberty.

JanesO, Thank you on behalf of my friends, students and families of
Undocumented workers. I do understand how reasonable people can disagree on this issue, and I do thank everyone for their comments in this honest debate. I state that these millions are Americans because tgey were born in Mexico which is a part of North America.

While I agree with your conundrum,
I feel that there should be a difference in treatment of those who follow the laws and those who don't. I know this issue has a big grey area but there are many immigrants who come here through proper channels that often take several more years than the illegal routes. So, yes, I too am very confused about this issue but I don't think condoning the lawlessness is the answer either.

scoop, I see your dilemma!
From what you've just written, I know who I would rather deport . . . but that would be illegal, I think.  The whole thing is such a complex quandary.

JanesO, I am very mixed on this also, on one hand I don't know how we can
reward these people for breaking the law and then where I live in upstate New York I see the cops hauling in illegal aliens who are WORKING picking apples, working  in slate quarries,  doing the dirty work on horse farms, and cleaning the dirty motel rooms, and then I see lazy low-life scum coming out of my county welfare office lugging bags of free groceries from the food pantry and overhear their conversations about their Medicade, and unemployment benefits as they buy more beer, cigarettes  and scratch off lottery tickets from the local convience store, it is tough for me to make a decision on who should be here and just who we should deport.
