- Go to Are You Ready for This? Gas Tax on Miles, Not Gallons!
... through DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality) to test our engines prior to being issued tags for our cars, noting mileage would be a simple addition to the existing process, and wouldn't "track" the travels of individuals. -- I own a Jeep Cheroke 4WD (as we get snow in Portland and it makes me independent), but I focus on keeping my driving to a minimum to justify the vehicle. -- Taxing on mileage makes sense, but I'd still like to see significan tax breaks for concept and high-fuel economy cars as well as additional fuel economy requirements for new vehicles.
The article says they're going to use GPS.......with your way, what happens when you go across the country on vacation.....you still owe Oregon mileage charges when you weren't using their roads? What about visitors to the state? They get a break...so in state people are charged higher "Gas" taxes than out of staters....do you see the problem here.....

I remember Oregon's old anti-litter slogan, Keep Oregon Green!
Keep Oregon Green, indeed - green with tax money. This is as worrisome as what state and local governments will do when tobaccco tax renevues dry up thanks to their anti-smoking campaigns. It wil lbe a cold day in purgatory before they eliminate the revenues gained by punishing smokers with confiscatory tobacco taxes.

Corbin,
This is frightening! But please, not so loud! I don't want our Canadian authorities to hear this. They have a tremendous talent for picking up bad ideas!

I wasn't aware of this
I grew up in Oregon, and I remember it being a tax free state. The first time we traveled to California I argued with a cashier because she charged me tax on a purchase. This was something I had never heard of before. Has Oregon always done this where gasoline is concerned?

Oh this is awful. The person who thought of this
should have all of his/her phones tapped, personal documents rifled through, etc to see what other noxious taxation notions are being thought up. Talk about an invasion of one's total privacy.
