All the neighborhood children are constantly bugging us...

to come in and see my little zoo.  I think I should start charging an admission fee.

I'm also considering buying a little leash, so I can take Rose Red out for walks.

OH MY GOSH!
Meeting Rose Red face to face would truly give me nightmares for life, I think!
hehe, no offense meant, of course...I am just a baby about spiders!!

Thank you, CunningLinguist...
although, personally, I feel the thick hair adds another level of cuteness.

Other than that, they're very charming.

They'd be damn sexy, too, if you could get 'em to shave their legs.

Interesting & disturbing :-)

FYI, likely order of presentation:

1. Giant Centipede

2. Tarantula

3. Emperor Scorpion

4. African Praying Mantis

5. Giant Water Bug

6. "Cat"

posted by Mademoiselle on February 25, 2006 at 6:44 AM | link to this | reply

No, Rose Red herself is 9 inches...
which is about the maximum length her "breed" would likely ever reach.  She's not the only type I have, however.

posted by Mademoiselle on February 25, 2006 at 6:42 AM | link to this | reply

That thing is HUGE
I would have considered  a furry spider as a pet for the kids (since I am not allergic to them) but being bitten by one would probably kill a kid...Yours is 9 inches across? or is that how big one can grow?

Thanks for your quotes. Believe it or not, here are 20 clicks because I had so much fun clicking, I overshot by a margin. I hope this can forward your cause to whatever use at your own discernment.

Good for you, David...
and thanks for the compliment.  I guess all those "creative writing" courses are starting to pay dividends.

Very descriptive!

I love spiders!

I used to run from them in horror, now I just admire them.

And I don't kill them anymore, I just let them go on their way!

If you haven't seen her yet, curator...

there's another one of my pets here:

Yeah, Gulliver...

something like that.

I love how whenever a serial killer is caught, his neighbors are always totally shocked, saying things like, "Never in a million years, could we have imagined he'd be capable of doing something like this ... he was always so quiet and pretty much just kept to himself." ... as if that is the behavior of a socially well-adjusted person.

Jack...

Being "pretty young" isn't much of an excuse for Sasha Cohen, seeing as most female figure skaters tend to have very brief careers (not unlike woman tennis players) and peak around 21.

P.S. That's odd about the photos ... because they've already been reduced quite a bit, thus they aren't really all that large.

MPO: "Underneath the fangs and fur, she's a real sweetheart"
You sound like a death-row convict's mother pleading before the judge to remember that her son was such a sweet boy!  You know...before he started roasted the neighbor's cat.

Hi
Ok - couldn't see pic's 2 and 3 at all - not such a bad thing 'cos I ain't overly fond of spiders. Got this wicked voice in my head saying that you should post those pic's on Temple's blog. (She really gets freaked out by spiders.) Please don't though - it's a wicked voice, don't listen to it.

mpo,

The thumbnails worked OK, but when I clicked to see the bigger ones they took a long time to load, which means BIG files.  Usually when you have a pic that is too big for the browser it reduces it and shows a little thing that looks like a sheild and has two outward pointing arrows.  When you click on that, full size shows.  The sheild isn't showing up.  I'll look into it.  I want to know for my own use anyway.

I think my grandfather may have been a ''comyanist.''  He was run out of the Ukraine by the Czarists in the early 1900s; a ''subversive'' who worked on underground papers.

I think you're right about Cohen not being tough enough.  She's pretty young, and I think the fierce competition is something she hasn't learned.  But for raw talent, she's incredible.  She is beautiful, and emotional, and sensitive, which really shows through in her skating,  but she does need to add some survival skill.  I only hope she can do that without reducing the sensitivity that makes her skating so appealing.

That's only because you haven't had the chance to get to know her, Freelancer ...

I don't get what the problem would be (concerning the photos)...

the thumbnails all work perfectly fine for me.

~ Yup, I'm a "communist".

~ Cohen simply isn't mentally tough enough ... second straight Gold Medal that she's coughed up.

mpo,

I copied one of the big images to see on PaintShop.  It took a long time to load, and I have a cable connection.  The little expander icon didn't appear on my browser either.  There must be an HTML trick to that.  You're Russian descent too?  Oh my.  I don't think I can take it.

That was really sad to see Sasha fall.  Then she lost her concentration and blew it again.  Even at that, she was so far superior that I could hardly believe it.  I think she would have easily skated away with the whole thing if it hadn't been for the falls.

Unless, of course, she killed your cat first.

Just joking.

I have a cat, too ... and the two of them get along just peachy.

Yikes! Not something I'd want around the house.

Just don't get a centipede!
But, any of the others (tarantula, scorpion, water bug, praying mantis, vinegarroon) should be pretty safe.  Though, personalities vary somewhat by breed.

Once you get over the initial "fear factor", jensay...

they truly do make wonderful pets.

My mother expected to merely "tolerate" their presence in the house, but over time, she has (slowly) come to regard them as part of our "extended family".

posted by Mademoiselle on February 23, 2006 at 9:04 PM | link to this | reply

You don't sound too "enthusiastic", Ann.

posted by Mademoiselle on February 23, 2006 at 9:01 PM | link to this | reply

Actually, Lensman...

I maintain "mixed loyalties" (because I am an American citizen of direct Russian descent).

Of course, that proved to be of little solace, since Irina Slutskaya just "choked" even worse than Cohen.

Well, better late than never, Dr.
Oh and, for anyone interested ... the US's best remaining hope for Olympic stardom, figure skater Sasha Cohen, just fell twice during her long program.  There goes any chance for the Gold Medal.

Spiders are arachnids, Lensman...
I've always loved all manner of animals (one of the few positive traits I inherited from my mother) ... however, the moment I began handling various bugs/arachnids (while volunteering at the Zoo here) an immediate "life long bond" was formed.

Hi, MPO
I'm trying to be grown-up here, but they still give me the willies.   I guess I'll just keep thinking, "Big and furry...like a hamster...like a hamster."  Anyway, cool pictures.  When did you get interested in exotic insects?  Actually, some distant voice in my mind is saying, "Spiders aren't insects, they're animals."  Is it right?
