Definitely...and the last reason is frequently my reason.
If somebody really annoys me with their blog, I just don't read it rather than reply.

I just dropped by to say "Howdy neighbor" since I just discovered you in
the "Games & Hobbies" category.  MPO has been razing me about using big words.  She says her friends would give her a "wedgie" if she used the word "duplicitous" as I had just done.  I had to admit I had no idea what a "wedgie" was.  So, seeing your blog with the word "conceptualization" (I think it was) made me feel right at home.  There are only three blogs in this category!

I guess sometimes I comment because I want someone to know that I
appreciate that they took the time to read my stuff and I'd like them to know that I read theirs, especially when an item speaks to me.  That's pretty much covered in your explanation.

straightforward, I do because I'm inadequate, neurotic, insecure, paranoid,
narcissistic and needy.  I have it all!

Likewise,
I enjoy reading people stuff, having them return the favor, and vice versa.

Why do you smile when you look at someone ..whos stranger yet known...& why do you comment..the reasons are same...and we all know them very well.

I find the comments pages just as interesting as the posts most of the time.  It's like all the extra information you get on DVDs these days, as opposed to the old videotapes.  You can get to know a lot about a person when reading their posts, but there's a lot more you can learn through comment and banter.   My commenting doesn't follow as much of a pattern anymore.  Certain life changes are dictating my reading and commenting these days.

I like to post and love the clicks!  This may be the rare pollyanna in me, but I enjoy reading and commenting on the blogs here too.

Straightforward,

It has a lot to do with advertising.  A ''see and be seen'' thing.  Your read counts go up significantly when you run around making witty or psuedo-witty comments.  Name recognition is a big thing in attracting readers, whether they be those upon whom you comment or those who read the comments on their blogs.  Pick a popular blogger, leave notable comments, and you attract readers.  Blogit is structured to encourage that sort of behavior.  It is their lifeblood.

Is it a fools game?  Somewhat, but mastery of it can be very mildly profitable, and the return attention is somewhat gratifying to the ego.  Learning to be successful at it is to learn skills that are somewhat transferable to more profitable writing.

The connections are rather complex, and dependent upon individual objectives, both conscious and subconscious.

I'm all about the "reciprocal clicks"...

Only kidding!

I do it because, quite frankly, it keeps my mind sharp to conceive concise (occasionally clever) comments so quickly.
