We don't have any sympathy for the pigeon, either, Pat.  There are thousands of them and I'm sure the pigeons will have forgetten their mate already.  As for songbirds?  Do you think it is worth the hawk's time to snaffle up a snack as small as that?

See, I was right to worry
about my little songbirds now that a young hawk has begun patrolling the neighborhood!  Hawks are very efficient killers.  I'm sorry, but I can't work up a lot of sympathy for the pigeon -- if they all became the breakfast of something, it would be a good use of protein.  Very nice read, John....   I'm looking forward to hearing what those last clawprints might belong to.

Taps
Samantha came in from the garden yesterday with feathers in her teeth.  We think a bird or two had frozen to death.

Yesterday here was the coldest day of this year's winter season and I saw more birds than I've seen in a long time outside my window.   Some of them were acting a bit weird like they had frozen brains or something.

BI
Thanks BI.  We were lucky.  The animal wandering around the house ate the pigeon instead of us.

You are in the wilds, Anthony.  I live in suburbia - wild suburbia

smartdog
I'll keep you informed of any follow ups, smartdog.  The dead pigeon became another animal's supper - saved me from clearing up.

I would need a bigger bank balance as well, M.P.O.  You do watch some strange programmes!

Azur
Sorry about that, Azur.  The good news is that a nocturnal animal had a pigeon takeaway.

I am wishing you luck.. Those are some adventure tales that you've told. I love the foreast and nature but I don't think that I would have braved those temps., its a wonder you didn't freeze. Goood info in the frog and its blood.. that is neat! I hope you get the chance to speak with the publisher. Again, good luck!

Well, that was a good close anyway!  I'll certainly be back to find out about the animal tracks.  Sounds like an interesting excursion (?).

Be well,

On the nature channel, I once saw an enormous frog eat a duckling...

now that was unappetizing!  Not to mention, bizarre.

Terrific post.
