Religion is sacred. Don't make fgun out of it

And a good point you make, DamonLeigh. It is all too often we fail to see
things from the point of view of others.  I include myself in this group at times.  And although I do agree that we have no right to tell others to believe or disbelieve in any way, my mind refuses to bend itself around the death penalty issued for criticizing a prophet of a religion.  That is where tolerance steps in.  And forgiveness.  Show the infidels and the blasphemers the error of their ways.  Try to convert them.  And if none of that works, go ahead and kill them.

There's a Point...
...being well and truly missed here.

Yes, creating pictures of Mohammed is a blasphemous act, and a serious one in the Muslim world. Blasphemy was a capital offence in much of the Christian world once upon a time, and some would say the faith is all the worse off today because it is no longer.

However, who are we to judge what is 'right' and 'wrong' for Muslims to believe, or to take offence over? Surely, civilized humans respect one another, and the right to draw lines in the sand in certain palces. Why can we not respect this?

Furthermore, the cartoons did not just depict the prophet in a way that is seen as blasphemous. They also depicted the prophet - tyo whom all Muslims relate - as a mad friggin' bomber! And by doing so, merrily tars every Muslim with the same bigotted brush that Bush and others have been doing now for several years.

Of COURSE they suffered a sense-of-humour failure. If you were in a similar position (which is, alas, proving to be way beyond the imagination of most of us), we'd be pissed, too.

Funny as satire? Funny as amusing? Funny as dark humor? Funny as just
weird?  By the way, food4thought, where did you happen to see them?

Saul...
I looked at the cartoons and my head exploded, so a word of caution to the wise.  They are that funny.

Me, too. How could anyone live in a world without humor and scantily-clad
women?  Why would you want to?

I know... and that's really unbelievable to me.

blackcat30: They are living in the world of the prophet Mohammed, roughly
the 6th and 7th centuries.  Believe me, this explains a lot...

You, my friend, are a true American, a patriot as it were. Above all else,
tolerance is the legacy bequeathed us by the framers of the Constitution.

This topic makes me crazy. I wrote a post earlier today about it...

All I can say is that I understand no one is supposed to draw Mohammed, good or bad.  But so what?  In Christianity, no one is supposed to take the Lord's name in vain either.  Should we put all those people to death?

It's just complete insanity.  What world are they living in???

minority religions, rather.

saul, I agree, but I will continue to fight for freedom against ANY
religion that seeks to control the government and threaten the liberty of conscience, especially toward the minorities religions (and non-religions) of our nation.

Unfortunately, Ariala, I believe that the right-wingers basically do have
control.  Congress, the executive and judicial branches are all deeply conservative or heavily lean in that direction.  Religious fundamentalism is sweeping the nation.  Megachurches are going up everywhere.  So far, the right isn't exactly what you would call pervasive, but they're like a glacier -- slow, formidable, with considerable weight behind it, gradually swallowing up everything in its path.  (Here's where you pray for global warming.)

saul, I am an infidel to the core when it comes to Muslim thinking. God
help us all if America, and its Christian right-wingers take control and spread their own Middle Age terror onto its people.

But, Ariala, you seem to be missing the point of zealotry. Killing in the
name of god gets you eternity in heaven with 72 virgins.  Unless, of course, you're a woman, then it gets you into heaven but with no greater social status than you had on earth, totally subservient to a man.  Unless you're a lesbian Muslim, which is punishable by stoning, but, since you're already dead, the rocks won't hurt as much and maybe Allah will let you have your 72 virgins anyway, since you did kill infidels in his name.  But, really, what reward could there be for killing a cartoonist?  A harem made up of Betty Boop, Betty Rubble, Wonder Woman, Broom Hilda, Wilma, Nancy, Lucy and Peppermint Pattie, etc.?  Maybe a hintai harem....

posted by saul_relative on February 4, 2006 at 9:53 PM | link to this | reply

I guess what bothers me most about this is that they can go out and
kill in the name of Allah, and justify it, yet other people who probably wouldn't physically hurt another human being draw cartoons and now they need to be killed?   That is so facking irrational.  I just can't believe it.

Yes, Blanche, and methinks those intolerant Saracens doth protest
too much.

Homer Simpson is an extension of what is so vile about America,
OFFBEATS, in the eyes of Muslims.  Matt Groening would probably be stoned to death in, say, Saudi Arabia, then beheaded for creating the slovenly yellow porker.  His constant hacks at the bible through Homer must be as insulting to Muslims as well as Christians (well, almost), because Muslims also follow the books of the Old Testament.  Yeah, I'm sure the average Persian just loves Homer Simpson.

No government should apologize for allowing freedom of its press, Ariala.
Let the individual media operations apologize on their own, if they wish.  The greatest thing about freedom of expression is that it can incorporate the freedom of belief.  Sadly, the converse is often not the case.

Muslims, as a rule, are quite intolerant when it comes to questioning
Islam in any way.  They are indeed much to serious about themselves, M.P.O.

They want to put him to death? That's a sad state of affairs! All over cartoons....wonder what they would think of Homer Simpson?

posted by Offy on February 4, 2006 at 9:19 PM | link to this | reply

saul, the government of Denmark shouldn't have to apologize for
its freedom of press.  I like the way you put that.  At the same time, we need to respect each other's religious convictions, but these are cartoonists and satirists for Pete's sakes.  I guess some cultures don't know how to laugh at themselves, eh?

But, really, you must admit...

muslims seriously need to lighten up.  Well, I should say some muslims.  I don't want to generalize ... besides, I have several muslim classmates who have perfectly well-developed senses of humor.

You and your third dimension.
