Hi John, I've used Skype for over a year now, but have used Gizmo more
in the last several months. www.gizmoproject.com I like paying for call out calls in U.S. Dollars rather than Eurodollars , and I think overall the sound quality is better.

haha if it were up to my Dad, he'd just throw it all out!
He is one of those "it's a bunch of old junk" types... They have odds and ends that probably are worth something and they have tried to figure it out some, but it IS a lot to learn!  Thanks for the ideas...I will ne sure to pass the info on to them...

BTW, tell your Dad it isn't something that can be done quickly - unless he wants to give them away.  It takes a lot of research to find makers marks, and whether they are worth much.  After that, if they want to sell online, it takes more time to take the photographs and write the descriptions.

Hi FF.  What Ell suggests is looking up eBay for prices.  Make sure the prices they check are  the SOLD prices, because some of the prices asked are in dreamland.  There are lots of jewelry sites they can check for prices/types/makers, etc.  There is also a book - which Ell uses - titled Warman's Jewelry, which shows makers names and shows pictures of trade marks to be found on jewelry.  Good luck.

Tapsel
Me too, Taps.  Windows 98 was a dream compared with this garbage. Please spare my life Mr Gates, I meant every word of it.

Hey I had to go check out Ell's site
Does she know a lot about those types of collectibles?  My Mom and aunt have a ton of stuff they have been trying to sell via garage sale, but it is not going fast enough for Dad. Mostly they have no clue what to charge for things anyway!

Johnmcnab, you have no idea how many times I have wished that I had
never changed to XP.

jacenta
Thanks, jacenta.  You're right about one thing; not a boring moment.

johnmcnab,

You two compliment each other and that is why it is right that you are together!  I find you both precious.  I love relationships that have spark and wonder.  Do you know what I mean.  Not a boring moment, right?

Some relationships are just meant to be and I think that is wonderful.  Tell Ell I said, "Hello!"

It is a well run shop, isn't it jacenta, but then Ell does most things with style.  She's still shaking her head wondering how the heck she married me.

Taps
Wait until I finish replacing this tyepwriter ribbon, Taps.  Ah, that's it.  Ell tells me that with XP you can already allow technicians to take over your machine - I think I'll go back to Windows 95.

Johnmcnab, At times, I don't even want to know about any more new
technologies.  This is one of those times.    Now, probably tomorrow I'll be back, hungry to learn more but, today simplicity is desired.

I'm with you on two counts, meringue; somebody should be reading me and let's get rid of call centres.

Blanche
Ell is a pseudonym, Blanche, just as much as Blanche and M are - and John and Ell.  When I used to write articles back in the old country I used the pen name of John McNab there as well, but if I wrote the article from the woman's point of view I would use the pen name Jill McNab.   For some odd reason, this used to infuriate Jill.  When I started again over here I used 'L', but she didn't like that.  I tried Elle, but she didn't like that.  Finally she settled for Ell.  And she now uses it on her rubylane shop.  Her own first name is typically Scottish and has to be spelled out for people.

JohnMcnab,
You mean Ell's real name is actually Ell? I thought you used that as a pseudonym.  I'll have to get to you when I have money to blow, but oh, so tempting, those earrings.  (as for the family, well, who doesn't have them).

Frankenkitty
Thanks Frankenkitty.  Just think, with the system I imagined, the call centre could show you how to fit the speakers.  It's a pity they couldn't pay for them as well.  Take care.

Sounds like a great idea!
I could use a system like this. I need to upgrade my computer first, I don't even have speakers. Take care

And the good thing about Skype, Blanche, is that it is FREE.

Azur
You're probably right, Azur, either that or it sounds simple but is impossible.

Blanche

I just downloaded it last week but haven't used it yet.  We both downloaded it late last year but Ell was convinced that mine was the cause of a virus which screwed up my machine for weeks, so she deleted it.  (It turned out that Symantec was the problem, but I didn't bother reloading Skype)  Ell uses it for one of her small businesses and talks to Egypt, Italy, and etc.  She refuses to use the webcam. Hold on, I am being addressed by her highness.  Why don't I advertise her Ruby Lane shop on Blogit?   I suggested that months ago, mighty one and you told me to stick it where the sun don't shine......oops, sorry this is a family show. www.rubylane.com/shops/ellsfinecollectibles  Happy?  Why is it that women always say no to a bright idea and then wait a loooong time before suggesting it themselves??

I use Skype and I was thinking of getting a cam
after some friends sent a very nice video message. Your idea sounds like common sense so it will never take off

John,
I looked up Skype.com. It sounds very simple, too, just download and go.  That could be a simple solution to my Mom's long distance...hm.

The LAN sounds like a good system if they can do that with it.  I envy Ell her dexterity with these things as well.  She was more of a hardware specialist than a software one, but I love the way she just looks at the computer and before she tells me to 'move it,' she gives a couple of nods and a grunt - that's when I know the problem is already solved.

Smartdog
Thanks, Smartdog, but I have a feeling you're right about the simplicity. When I suggested it to Ell she just said "Don't be ridiculous."  The story of my life, sigh.

posted by johnmacnab on January 15, 2006 at 10:45 AM | link to this | reply

John,
In a big corporate office with technical support, tech support is able to key into your system and "see" on their screens exaclty what is on yours, however, I think that's with a LAN.  Since there seem to be cameras just about everywhere else, including what I sadly predicted, one located in a women's restroom, why not use the camera to ease the frustration.  I envy Ell's facility with these things. I was on the phone with Dell a few times over a system problem and I ended up taking the Dell into the shop.  Clueless, I tell you, clueless.

You suggestion is far too sensible and simple for a call center to implement.  But I like it.
