And then you continually modell, talk about and congratulate respect - other periphery things like swearing will become negotiable.
That's when you negotiate it right out of the scenario.

I think TV
can be a bad influence but the real decoder is the parents not the one in the set. If parents have a passive approach to tv, radio, web etc then their chidren are on undilluted receive mode. Our children have a pretty good lifestyle. We don't expect thanks but we do expect respect. I used to love The Waltons by the way.

I don't think we can blame tv.... but the choice of programs maybe?
My nieces are still small, but they think "stupid" and "hate" are curse words.
