hi kingmi
I must admit I haven't read the book so I'm not sure how faithfully the film sticks to the text. The whole business of translating novels into film is interesting. I tend to feel great trepidation when I hear a director is sniffing around one of my favourite books (particularly favourite Australian novels). But there are some novelists whose books have inspired particularly memorable movies (Graham Greene's books have generally been translated into film well).

Many thanks for the compliment. I've enjoyed keeping a record of responses to the movies I've viewed. Sometimes it's a handy reminder as a lot of movies are quickly erased from the memory. But the films that bring the heart delight or communicate insight and beauty are a treasure to be revisited.

rob, Sounds like the book followed the novel religiously. I liked the book

(twice) and wanted to see the movie.  I thought Tailor of Panama (which I have admitted on this site to having read twelve times-- true) was a liberal departure from the actual book.  However, as many of the LeCarre critics that I have tread have stated, there does appear to be more of an early Carre / later Carre difference than just style.  His politics have sent him, as they say, "round the bend".

I love Carre.  I have read his entire portfolio at least twice.

I've enjoyed reading your insightful and sensitive reviews.  I've often thought about writing movie and book reviews, but have not.  Still I enjoy reading reviews if they are intelligent and honest, as are yours.  I loved especially reading "West Side Story" and "Singing in the Rain."  Those are two movies I can see repeatedly and always find myself grinning with pleasure all the way through "Rain" and always on  the edge with "Westside".  I will make a point of reading your reviews on a regular basis.  Like you, I am also an fan of 50's jazz.  Nothing like it since for me, unfortuately .  I keep waiting for the revival.
