It appears the computer is working temporarily, BrightIrish and if it keeps working I may even think about the novel.

Johnmcnab

FactorFiction
She is truly a time-served, certificated, pain in the ass techie, FactorFiction - the kind who frowns if you touch a key without permission.  You may have a husband like that??????   She started away back before computers, mostly hardware, but she also knows software.  I know not to open anything, but then Symantec takes care of that and pop-ups.  That's what is so puzzling about this load of crap I'm going thru.  Her machine is OK and we are connected - (so obviously it's my fault!!  duh!!).   The only thing that changed was a new router from Sympatico and an update from Symantec.  She has now reached the conlusion that MSN and Norton are in conflict as MSN is now trying to do its own firewalling.  This is written on my machine - without Norton or any other kind of anti-virus (which she thinks is safe due to the new router, but I'm not staying online long enough to find out.  All I'm doing is answering comments and then perhaps writing a blog and then I'm off).  Ell reckons she will be re-installing Norton again today as she thinks she has identified the problem.   Fingers crossed.

jacenta
Our computers are networked as well, jacenta and I am used to the 'Are you in the middle of anything important?  I have to reboot.'  syndrome.   Needless to say, Ell's computer is the computer and mine is second.  The thought of writing the novel has started to frighten me already.

Is she truly techie? Our firewall is a separate Linux box... and Symantec Antivirus with daily updates..and antispam software that filters out a lot of crud some of which has viruses. Have not seen a virus (other than a rare quarantine) ummm ever on this computer. (knock silicon) Has she warned you not to open attachments (unless you know who they are from and that they definitely sent them) upon pain of death?

johnmcnab...

At times I use my hubby's computer when mine is down or the satelite connection is not working and he is not at home.  He knows it though.  haha

We are networked, thus if somehow he has a problem, he tells me yet again, "I have to reboot,ok?" he gets this quilty, I am sorry look on his face, for he knows that I will lose my satelite connection.

I think it is great you are going to write a novel. I like your writing style. I hope your system is back to par really soon.***** Tell Ell I said "Hi".

FactorFiction
You'd better not give Ell your husband's email adress, FactorFiction, or she'll be right there.  The last I heard was that I should be able to read eamils soon but they will be routed through the space shuttle.  Still can't surf the net.  She got a survey from Norton yesterday on this (her's) machine.  Boy o Boy did she fill it up - I think there may be a few problems at Norton's end with melted wires and firewalls burning out.

Tapsel
Ell's getting closer to fixing the PC, Taps.  She thinks I should be able to read my emails soon.  I tried the pen and paper last week and looking at all those sheets of pristine white paper and knowing I was expected to fill them almost made me ga-ga.  One thing about a computer I hadn't thought about before is that you don't need to look at a blank sheet of paper or a completely blank screen.

hehe you are too funny...

So THAT'S who's calling my husband for computer help now...the Hubble telescope about some Canadian broad trying to fix up a PC running DOS from 1989...

Johnmcnab, can't you just write that mystery novel by hand?  People used to do that.  HAHA   Keep the faith.  Ell will get you fixed up with a good working computer.

MerryAnne
Glad to hear it is going well computerwise, MerryAnne.  I'm still having the same problems.  Norton keeps telling me I am not covered for a new serious threat and then refuses to let me online so that I can connect to Symantec to fix it.  I know it gives me a great excuse not to write but I'm starting to shake, rattle and roll.

Kingmi
That would have been a good idea, kingmi.  Perhaps they should change the name Norton to - needs-voodo-before-installing.  Still sneaking onto Ell's computer when she isn't running re-installation discs on mine........using hers of course to find the info.  Going quietly crazy.

Well my new computer is just ticking along quite nicely
although it does crash more often than my old Mac did.  So far so good - now if I could quit stalling and get back to writing all would be well.  Good luck with your computer woes John!

johnmcnab, your novel idea sounds interesting. I too have one under the su
surface simmering away.  I bought a new computer from Gateway.  Very cheap and good looking, works like a charm.  I put Norton anti-virus on my sister's computer las Christmas and she had to take it to the shop.  I think what she needed was the snake charmer first.  Whattyacall'em?  Spyware?
