Thank you, Ebb and Flow, HE does; I could not do my job without Him!

God must give you great strength to be such a pillar of support.

You got it, Taps. But I do not regret time spent with families, sharing their grief.

Hi babe -- I'm so sorry for your loss, but thankful your mother did not die alone.  Thanks for sharing.

This brings back sad yet oddly comforting memories. I'll never forget the nurses who were with my mother during the last hours of her life.

Food4thought,

I love working with families even if it means being the bearer of bad news.  I try to be very honest and transparent while also tempering my words with as much grace as possible.  So far, in over 10 years, I have not been sued.  I'd like to think it's competence mixed with honest compassion.

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words. We need more nurses which is one reason why I'm trying to write about nursing from a variety of different angles!

Quirky, I tend to fall apart later.  That day, sleep was completely illusive (sp???) as I tossed and turned and shed a few tears and desperately attempted to sleep.

Thanks for sharing!

It sounds as if you did the best you could...
I admire nurses, such an integral part of health care.  To have to do what should be the doctor's job, well sounds like there wasn't much you could do about that.  Your compassion shows through, that is a comfort to the family for sure.

oh...this was really sad...what a difficult thing that would be to do, and how it must take great strength to not go to pieces as you are telling them.
