- Go to The First Step to Mars is the Moon.
Egads, man!
Which rock have you been under? Our space program has lead to the development of many commercially viable things from plastics to medicine, communications to fuel-cells to improved batteries, from the social sciences and psychology, to cancer and heart-disease research. Heck, there's even the small things, such as the ball-point pen that writes upside down! (Oh, and don't forget Tang!)
And those are only the practical things. Even more important are the steps forward in knowledge of our own planet, of our universe and of our relationship to both. And lets not forget that resources on our planet oare limited, and some day mining in the astroids and on other planets may well be our saviour.
Further, the other planets, particularly the "gas giants," are reservoirs of potential energy just waiting for us to tap.
Stop being short-sighted, man. Open your eyes. More importantly, open your mind!
