Sorry, Joe

Missed that comment.  I wrote this sometime ago, but yes, I do tend to write according to what is going on around me.

Cosy,
Thanks much. Mmm....it's worthless to pick battles that aren't worth fighting. That quote is quite truthful. We tend to tinge our truth with our own views and there's hell to pay sometimes if anyone dares cross us. I'm a great respecter of those who respect others. That works for me everytime. Feel free to use what you see here. I write for all who read, including myself.

Wordsmith

stopped in for a *hug*...hey, where's your about you page??? Lawrd, I like to know who I'm reading...

Well, about this, you pick good topics. There's much to say about that statement, but I will solely say, make sure we pick battle's worth defending...like freedom of speech, religion, and so forth. The other view-points we may have are in fact true for each independently, "The truth is flawed by our own perceptions." So they should not be battled but rather respected. Awesome idea...in fact I will steal it now, may I? May I? Pleeeease??? lol

I can't help but wonder what made you write this. Could it have something to do with your boss and his tendency to stay quiet about his underling's doings?? Hmmmmm.

Katray,
Thanks. Now there's a challenge - being flexible.  The older I get, the harder I struggle to be flexible, especially to change.  Since I like learning, it's not that hard all the time and yes, there are some beliefs that are so strong as to be unwavering.

Strong, well expressed post Word
I try to keep an open mind and be flexible, but I do have beliefs that are unwavering.

Malcolm,

I believe in dealing with things when they happen. I've found that in most situations this way works better. I find that face to face, it is easier to deal with whatever situation needs sorting out. If I leave things undone, they tend to fester and then I waste a lot of time thinking about all that I wanted to say, could have said and didn't.

I do agree, however, that it is much harder to listen than to speak.

Ms. Vision,

The eye is a little unnerving,  eh?  I like graphics, smileys and such way too much, I think.

I understand not liking conflict. I am the same way myself. I don't suggest getting into arguments over every little thing, but when it does matter it's time to speak out.

Genius, that is oh, so true!
  Thanks for stopping in.

I agree
about getting the point across but it needn't be in that particular situation or meeting or whatever. I often sit and absorb and then attack in a different way - usually with the written word which can be longer lasting and more effective. It's important to listen without letting 'noise' disturb you. If you're frustrated or feeling bad about not being assertive you'll miss the point and won't be able to deal with it afterwards either. Listening is harder than speaking.

I love the pink background but they eye is really hard to look at.

I find it really hard to assert myself in certain situations. I'm a strong person but I hate conflict so I tend to let things drift a bit. When Its really important though and about things that you believe in really strongly I guess its important to speak up.

It's important to get your point across...
especially when you know your point makes sense, and deserves to be aired... Good point in a good post....

Amateur..

It does prove difficult all the time to stand up for what we believe in, but I'd say it's worth doing.

BrightIrish,
It's true, and it has happened to me that when I don't stand up something I should I lose respect for myself and feel that I didn't do the right thing by keeping quiet.

posted by word.smith on September 20, 2005 at 8:35 AM | link to this | reply

What you wrote is right and true. But it is also one of the most difficult thing to practice, as people will test the strength and integrity of your belief.

You have a point there MayB.
Sometimes it's just not worth the effort to get involved in pointless battles.

posted by word.smith on September 19, 2005 at 12:28 PM | link to this | reply

That's a good approach, mcbreeze.
Most of the time we are too busy to even hear what the other person is saying, we're just waiting our turn to jump in with our point of view.

True, Masky.
Mudslinging and drag-down, knock-out fights do more damage than anything else. I find it best to pick and choose what I defend and when I do choose to defend my beliefs I try not to offend others in getting my point across.

It pays not to be a wet noodle everywhere but on Blogit perhaps. Here it is often best to use your noodle and say nothing and save the energy for other things

Word...

He He He...the good thing about being a wet noodle is I'm neither over or undercooked yet.

I believe battles must be fought and we must stand up for and speak up about what we believe in; however, I prefer to engage in wars with a well thought, tactful approach.  Wet noodles rarely survive when faced with mud slinging.

Very thoughtful, word!  Thanks for putting it out there!
