I think you have prepared them....
That when they get out there in the real world, where they are getting paid to produce, they know what to expect. Question if you are interested in submitting articles to different publications, do you just randomly mail them out? What's the procedure anyone???

They all THINK you're being tough on them??
Sounds to me like you ARE being tough on them. But, in my opinion, that's a good thing. If your standards are high, then they can easily hurdle the challenges from those whose standards ARE NOT as high as yours.

Gotta be cruel to be kind, May.

They need to understand that they will face much harsher
criticism when they get out there in the real world.

It's nice to dig up the old stuff every once in a while...

QuirkyAlone, are they articles which were published or unpublished? The ones I am referring to were published. I am only grateful that my early efforts pre-date websites!

I love looking at things I wrote a long time ago--makes me realize just how much I've grown and improved as a writer.

Ann, I would rather that a student choose the right course for them even if it meant losing them myself. It is much more trouble than it's worth to teach someone doing the wrong course. I would rather have fewer students and even earn less (though that's hardly possible) if it meant that people who were there had an aptitude and interest in the topic. The colleges recruit the students but I have to question their selection criteria.

Luckily that work is part-time although it sometimes takes over. I couldn't stand it full time.

That is a difficult situation. If teaching is your bread and butter now, you'll have to retain students. It is no fun looking for new pupils often.

MayB

I guess things have changed as much in America as in Britain.

Permitting children to become ignorant of their ow language is to rob them of one the most precious things that they can possess. So sad, and so cruel to deny them the magic of reading
