Hi Brisbane Artist, I think that landing an agent is the hardest thing to do these days. You have to send them letters, synopses, and sample chapters. Then they decide if you have an idea that they could interest publishers in. You could always send brief emails to a few asking if they are interested in particular kinds of ideas so that you don't was time sending it to people who are definitely not interested.
I did that and had two positive responses. Now one of the agents is looking at my proposal and has advised me she has some thoughts and comments which means (i think) that the idea has possibilities but needs adjustments.
