This is a great idea, Krisles
I'm sure you'll come to treasure these recordings one day. And, I'm sure your children will come to treasure them even more. . , alongside the written account you will be writing.

Thanks....and I know how much they will mean, because I already know how much I regret not having them from those who are already gone and I have nothing like this from.

I know what you mean about your Dad's written words....I run my fingers across inscriptions in books, and cards where mine wrote...he had such a beautiful script.  I only have a small snippet of tape with his voice on it...when I think of all the speeches he gave over the years, and the opportunities I had but I just never even thought about it....and I would love to have some of his singing.  There are certain phrases I can still hear in my head...but I wonder how long I'll hold them...

How sweet of you.....I can just imagine how priceless that is to him....now you need to be doing it for your babies, too.

I was just telling Lensman that Usual and her brother are working on a family memoir....your family sounds ideal for that.  With your stories...your father's military yarns, your mother's and aunt's stories - sounds like a best seller right there!  And with photos...wow!

Lensman
Thank you.....and I think a combination of video, tape and written would be ideal so you might end up with that.  Usual and her brother are working on a family memoir....you might do something like that with your writing skill.

Hi Krisles...Lots of valuable ideas in here.....
You are so organized, I can tell. Hearing a voice of a departed one that has been recorded is so haunting and yet, so priceless...Wish I had  more of my dad's voice on tape. I have photos, and especially his written words, which have alwasy soothed me in my darkest hours. Great post.

This is an excellent idea and I highly recommend it too. My x boyfriend and I went to Jersey a in 2000, or 99, but anyway he interviewed his 95 year old Nan. She died a couple years later and I had put the tape in the piano bench when we broke up. He called a year back and had found it. He thanked me for it...there was so much great information on it...good memories!!

Hey Kid
I went back and re read your comments. You had the question, "doesn't make sense in regard to a time frame" (or something like that). Could you explain? The world war II was in 1941 to 1945, that would make me 71 if it was infact me. Pleae give me some info. Thanks zarrothepaun alpha

Thanks for the read!
Yeah, it's sort of fiction but it is based on a bunch of lives. I got a nice critique from another writer about improving it. i went back and did an update. If you liked it, I have about another million words ready to edit. If you're inclined, go back to the site and take a look. I put the revision on fiction and also on Opinion. Illegal? Maybe, but that's the way I am. Real reason it's on Opinion, I want to get my Opinion onto the first page so I don't need to turn the page. Call me lazy. Thanks a lot for the interest, zarrothepaun alpha

Been working on something like this, actually.
Want to get my mom and a couple of my aunts together and just let them riff and rap and talk story all weekend while we record it. They've agreed to do it, and since all of them are highly entertaining as well as full of such memories, this should be fun.

WWe've already gone through the family pictures and such.

I wish we had done this with my grandparents while they were around and lucid.

Krisles, nowadays it is easy to record people on MP3 or i-Pod. The sound quality is excellent and no chance of the tape perishing.

What a great post.  Lots of good ideas.  I like how you applied your work skills to it.  I may try some of them because I'm still not getting total cooperation, although they are loosening up a bit now.  They tend to clam up when the spotlight hits them.  I like the recording idea because it's less intrusive than a video camera aimed between their eyes and less work than writing things down....

I'm tellin' ya, the recorder thing is not hard....just sittin' around the table after Sunday dinner sometime! Make ir purposely stiff and formal, like a news interview...just question and answer....you won't believe how fast everyone loosens up....and if that never happens, so what? You still have the information and their voices.

I'd love to do it... but it's difficult for me to even ask.....
writing is easier.   I bought my mom a book once, for her grandchildren.  She was supposed to answer the questions... but she never did it.  Not that I'm aware of.
