Burly, I have no problem with engaging in the programs, likthe star wars,
look at all the technology we have today because of Reagan.  What I object to is the managementstructure that just ensures these repeat disasters.

That maybe true..but it is no reason to impeach the President!

whacky, you're dad must've been one of the geniuses that started this science.  We could use him today.  Like Harry Truman...

2-dog, my point is why didn't they fix, admit to changing foam tiles, or
change the achitectural management style so that decisions get mad by the people who are best able to make them, not middle managers and gatekeepers.

The Shuttle program is still the most successful flight test program in United States history. There have only been two Orbiters lost during the entire shuttle flight period. The real problem started when President Kennedy opted for rocket propelled space flight instead of sticking with the X-15 project, a shuttle prototype. Had NASA continued with the X-15, a re-useable space craft, the whole space program would be decades ahead of present day. Rocket propelled space flight was a quick fix to put a U. S. man on the moon first, and if you remember, three rocket pilots died on the launch pad, and Apollo 13 only returned because the crew, and the support crew on the ground were the best in the business.

They knew what went wrong
I wonder why they didn't fix it? Too busy tapping the gas gague wondering if the tank was full? I won't tell you what may dad used to say about them. (He was an electrical engineer at Sandia Labs.)

My question is, why are we even doing these flights?

It does indeed. I think NASA, has been taking payloads up there for years. NASA has paid it's dues to this goverment. As well they have taken it up for private companys at no small cost! Cut the cord, watch it grow, lets really go into space!

OBP, you took the words right outta my mouth, I was just about to say...
did you see Bill Bennett on C-SPAN the other night? He stated -- and I thought I would die! -- the education department is exists for the producers and notthe consumers. If it were in the private sector, we wouldhave the highest SAT scores world-wide, the lowest drop-out rate, zero poverty, zero illiteracy, zero crime. Also, he quoted Texas gubernatorial candidate, Kinky Friedman, as stating that to solve the immigration crisis and the drug flow from Mexico, we need do only one thing. Cut spending at that point by 90% and with the rest, pay the Mexican generals a million dollars a year apiece. Then tell them we are deducting 10,000 dollars for every illegal or pot bust we catch. Think about it. The free market rules.

The goverment needs to get the hell out of NASA. We will forever be flying shuttles w/o new confirguration craft for many years. This could be a turning point for the future of space, allow them to become private. Half the time I think our goverment holds them back is for the sole purpose of control.
