But Adaman why do you think that democracy is about numbers. It has a lot
to also do with the how - how the consensus is obtained

You know, just because something's decided on democratically...
doesn't mean it's right!  Just because democracy is better than most political philosophies doesn't mean that it's the best!  The right decisions can only be counted on by people who think clearly, and they're clearly in the minority!

You've asked the wrong question.
The issue isn't whether or not the situation is democratic (surely it is not) but whether it relates to life as it is lived. And it does, of course, relate to life. I can imagine your question generating a lively discussion among wise souls seated in a circle, each positing their own views. Which would be a democratic situation, I think. So the process would be a Socratic discussion. I imagine what one thinks about whether or not the "decision" made by the majority is right would depend on whether she were a member of the majority or the minority; or it could depend upon the speaker's emotional connection to the one who is "guilty."

We get around that question in the electoral college.
People from Wyoming get as much reporesentation as people from NY, NY.  Thanks for the stop 'n' chat!

As long as everyone has an equal vote, this is still a democracy.
Majority groupings may be prejudicial, but that does not mean that they are not democratic.  If the smaller community is allowed to vote in this decision, it is a democratic decision.  If not, then it is dictatorial.

Iraq is said to be a democracy now, but in my opinion the jury is still out
because the Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis will eventually show us their idea of a democracy down the road.

The sound of that is too confusing.
Totalitarian? Don't let limey see this.
