NCWriter, yes sadly merit is usually unreward in the writing game

Just a Thought...
The way I see it, the money does kind of suck blogging. Unless you really, really, really get a name for yourself and get a good site, and advertising, and really market that site, you're not going to make much (I mean anyone, not just you MayB). So why not put the energy into writing something you really love (novel, memoir, short story collection, collection of essays) then self publish and spend your efforts marketing THAT. We all know that we can write, unfortunately getting paid for the writing we WANT to do doesn't always have much to do with how well we do it...

Hmmm, I enjoy blogging too, but I also enjoy the research for articles. I find writing blogs much easier though, perhaps because I'm not as concerned about language and the style is more laid back. I'm sure you will have no problem publishing any books you write.

MayB,

It just seems such a logical way to go with this really I'd think. Just think of the paper and trees it would save in just a few years time! And add to that printing and shipping costs and all that is used in resources doing this as well.

Yes it will be interesting. I agree-- I resist paying for text at all costs. I'll buy a paper, mag or book but I won't pay online.
The other model is to be sponsored by a company and provide advertising. Of course if it were easy more people would be doing it

MayB,
Actually recently a fellow writer and I were talking about this and how it seems people just will not pay to read stories and such on the internet. But, recently I read where there is a new trend toward on-line publication which will be done just like the music industry. Pay a flat rate for one story to download, just like a song, or pay a monthly fee whereby you can download as much from the site as you like, which I would guess is somehow kept track of on which articles and stories are downloaded. How they will pay the authors it didn't say. It will be interesting to see how and if this develops. Cent

Marshallengraved, keep at it, fix goals, move towards them, be bold

Zentropa, never mind about the earnings -indeed spending too much time on blogging is costly. I agree that once one gets going on a blog it should be easy

writing professionally is my goal...
I wanna be recognized for my work...i have several important projects going on. Like i said it in a recent post, it might be a hard struggle to achieve sth, but determination and willpower are the key to success:)

Blogging has its own charm, but may be professionally, it may not work!

Good question May
I enjoy blogging tremendously - I tell myself and everybody else it's to practice and hone my creative impulses, but I know of no other "work-out" so looked forward to and enjoyed. ;) I commend you for focusing on writing efforts away from blogging. Wish I could do the same.

I love blogging
but my travel articles have my whole heart. There is nothing greater then writing about wonderful places to visit, or maybe I just need a vacation.

Mayb,
You clearly have made a name for yourself in the field of writing, so can use that as a draw. Without credentials as drawing power, how would one convince a prospective client?

Just read your comment counter to mine.

HA!!!! Well placed!

I would think you need an seperate website for your weblog, with someone paying you for hits. Gomedome might have (MUST have) a better idea about that.

MayB,

Blogging professionally, assuming it were possible, sounds like it would be blissfully easy. All I want to do when I get a minute to sit down is write a diary entry about something. It's not such a big leap from that to a weblog. I've already kept three weblogs before, but this is the first one that I have attempted to earn some kind of money out of. But if current earnings are any indication, it will never be anything more than a hobby to me.

Mapet6, I like with blogs that I can dash them off. Most of the other writing I do requires sustained effort. Blogging is a little like performance art --something done in the instant although unlike performance art a blog can live somewhere forever, long after we are gone

Talion, perhaps but on the other hand it would be a pleasant way of assembling a body of work, somewhat less pressured than the writing work I do now

You make some good points. I think the difference between blogging and attempting to write a book or short story is that you don't feel like your post has to change the world, whereas when you working on YOUR story, you feel pressured to make an influence, to make your mark. It's just more relaxing to blog.

Blogging is an escape, like reading a good book for pleasure rather than a student reading the same book for a report. If blogging became a job it would lose its luster because it would be, well, work.

L.E.Gant, the way in is to blog about a specialist topic which attracts commercial interest. I am aware of a few examples of jobbing bloggers and those who have set up independent blogging business. Results are very mixed.

For example there are some technology blogs. As for the writing, I think it is easier than writing freelance articles a) because it would be writing about a subject in which one has expertise and can quickly assess information and b) because the best blogs tend to be succinct. Having said that, one needs to have knowledge and experience behind them to write succinctly and authoritively. Naturally I don't think my wittering on blogit is fit for that.

There's a lot of people (not in Blogit) who make a reasonable living through blogging. It's not much different from writing free-lance. The hard part is to make it commercial, which effectively means your name has to be a drawcard. Once you start on that road, though, you wonlt find it quite as simple as putting down thoughts that need little research - professional blogging is a tough market, and it needs advertising income to make it pay well. Other than that, you just need a web page, and the rest is just writing!

Now wait a darn minute here. Given the right idea, the right format, directed to the right audience, you bet your sweet bippy you could do it professionally. Your a darn good writer, I read you more than I comment, but if anyone can do it, your one!
