Thanks, food4thought.
It is imperative that we teach our children consideration, empathy, the difference between right and wrong.  It is these things that help us socialize, that make our society stable.  Take out these key ingredients and you have a self-centered society of wanton hedonists and nihilists.

to reiterate FF's question...
How do we arrive at a point where children even think of doing these kinds of things?  Are we so numb to our society crumbling?  Maybe I am reading too much into this, but then again I may not be reading enough either.  Either way, Saul, good food for thought, kudos.

As I pointed out, FactorFiction, this girl was either a
meanass kid or a sadistical little prankster.  Some kids are like that.  Of course, she could be a little sociopath.  That's a bit more disturbing.

ona a tangent...what kind of kid runs around sticking others (Lots of them!) with a needle!? Sorry, I am a little perturbed by that part in itself...

Ah, I see Saul
I didn't think of that - scary indeed! Hoping the result is wrong. Thank you for explaining.

katray, because one of the children tested positive.
You see, if the child really is HIV-positive, that child was so before the pricking with the needle.  And any child pricked with that needle afterward was pricked by an HIV-infected needle.  Since they are not sure of the sequence of the stickings, all the children are taking the meds.  As I said, hopefully the test was a false positive and none of the children are actually infected, but better to err on the side of caution (with the meds) until it is known for certain.

It is a huge tragedy Saul
and a shameful travesty of indifference and cold hearts worldwide. I must admit to being a little confused about this incident. Why is there concern these children are at risk? If the mother is negative, how could the virus be a threat? Giving medication as a precaution - why I wonder. Good, thought provoking post nonetheless.
