reni3, i agree. Our space issue is a problem transportation-wise.
Not to mention the auto / oil lobby that conspired with the Eisenhower administration to keep the focus on superhighways and off mass transit.  Sad.  What I think will happen, is that we will struggle along for a few more decades at 5.00 per gllon, and then start using hydrogen fuel cells.  The richest countries will use them the most, putting China in the place where we are as #1 consumer by 2030.  I think our fears and attention should be placed elsewhere -- like on the lookout for terrorists in our midst.  It's a much more immediate threat, albeit invisible.

Excuse me, but you have obviously never tried to park an SUV on a busy
street in Germany before. They have houses that are smaller than the average Ford Explorer.  And I would hardly call their automobiles "bland."  Truth is, most Europeans that I know ( and I know many) find our fascination with SUV's to be wasteful and highly disrespectful of the environment.  Besides, most Europeans don't NEED cars at all because their public transporation system puts ours to shame.  Seems to me like the only ones being forced to do anything are the Americans.  Ever try walking six miles to the local grocery store?  But a person without a car in the US would almost certainly have to if he/she lived in an average American town.  Talk about no choices.
