Comments on We Are Not God

"As for God's will, He gives us a free will, so we can't blame all of this on The Man Upstairs."

Nobody blamed God for anything. God has made His will known to us by removing Terri's ability to swallow. Man has intervened by shoving a tube through her navel. We have no right to play God.

"We've gained knowledge about feeding tubes, so it would be UNgodly not to use them..."

So you support stem cell research too? What about genetic engineering of our offspring so that we never have any more crippled or mentally defficient children? To ignore such technology or knowledge by not using it would be UNgodly in your world. (In case you're tempted, doctors can harvest stem cells from miscarried fetuses.)

"But nobody needs to be killed so that a feeding tube can be made available."

But in this case, one woman will be kept alive (apparently against God's will) for the sake of a few selfish people who supposedly "love" her? Why not let God's will take place and send Terri to the Glory of Heaven where God has already called her?

"There is nothing more sinister about feeding tubes than about a pair of dentures--or someone spoon-feeding you should you have either temporary or permanent loss of your limbs."

Except that in the case of Terri Schiavo, God has removed her ability to even swallow and man has intervened to sustain her body. God has called her. Her parents refuse to let her go out of purely selfish reasons.

"If you're going to say that, if someone dies of starvation and dehydration, that this is God's will, you would have to say that the murder of Jessica Lunsford was also God's will--therefore, the one who did it to her should walk. Think about it..."

I have thought about it. And it certainly must have been God's will that Jessica Lunsford died at the hands of John Evander Couey. Just as it was apparently God's will that Terri Schiavo can no longer swallow. Should we regard God in the same way we regard Couey? After all, He did it to Terri. Are you blaming God?

I'm with Manda on this one!

As for God's will, He gives us a free will, so we can't blame all of this on The Man Upstairs.

If this were before a time when a tube could be inserted into your stomach to feed you, Terri would either have to be able to eat through the mouth or else eventually starve.

However, we've gained knowledge about feeding tubes, so it would be UNgodly not to use them--unless the person it affected the most didn't want one inserted and had made that clear and in writing.  Or, if awake and capable at the hospital, had made that personal decision.

If you had to kill a baby--or someone of ANY age--to create a feeding tube, then, it would be wrong.

But nobody needs to be killed so that a feeding tube can be made available.

There is nothing more sinister about feeding tubes than about a pair of dentures--or someone spoon-feeding you should you have either temporary or permanent loss of your limbs.

If you're going to say that, if someone dies of starvation and dehydration, that this is God's will, you would have to say that the murder of Jessica Lunsford was also God's will--therefore, the one who did it to her should walk.

Think about it...

Write On, Manda!

I tend to agree with DM!
If it's all about God's will; well then this was certainly meant to happen!

Yes -- God Wanted Her To Die!

Otherwise, He wouldn't have removed her ability to swallow. Let's definitely NOT put her fate in the hands of God! Let's leave her fate in the hands of those humans who selfishly want her to live! After all, humanity has it all over God when it comes to wisdom!

I agree, Manda.  And I think Terri's life should always be in the hands of those who want her to live.

Seems To Me That God Has Already Spoken When

...He made it impossible for her to ingest food on her own. Doctors already "play God" by creating the condition where she can survive with just a feeding tube. Are we defying God's original plan for Terri Schiavo by keeping her alive? Who's to say.

As for dignity, playing political football with personal matters can't even approach the lowest level of dignity. I do not want the government intervening when I or my loved ones wish to die in dignity when God has already made His wishes known the way He has in the Schiavo case.
