I think i agree that a threat to suicide is a call for help

The threat is a call for attention to address some issues. If the person gave up entirely, s/he would just do it and not give advance notice to call for help.

there is a brain imbalance that makes them so depressed

that they cant see no future and no way out...they mostly feel like they are a burden on anyone....my brother took his own life last year and I will never get over it.....

its so hard to help anybody who wont help themselves...but those who are suicidal dont realise they have a problem.....we have to be there for them and offer as much support and love as we possible can...

If someone is talking suicide, they need help.

I always take it seriously.  Even if it is said for manipulative effect, it needs to be addressed, if for no other reason than to give the person some kind of reminder about crying wolf!

I'd rather turn out to be wrong in this direction than wrong in the other.

It's best to leave someone alone unless such a thing is physically attempted.

This is a threat that should be taken seriously
I have lived with this one first hand, but was too young to do anything about it. My father committed suicide when I was 15. All of the signs were there, but nobody said anything that would make him think twice about taking his own life.
