That is a good story Benzinha. Sometimes shock treatment is very effective. I had one of my students say this week that they thought editors were there to correct the spellings...!

May, Mom told me a story yesterday. A writer for the newspaper that my

father wrote for, had a lady writer who was about to be fired. Her misspellings were the problem. The editor was tired of juvenile corrections. My father handed her a dictionary one day at lunch and said, "Look up every word that you submit to the paper from now on or you are going to be fired."

She took his advice to heart, never misspelled again and became a fairly famous writer of six or seven books later on......She was 33 when he gave her the dictionary.

Laziness. Lack of reading  and writing skills, but ultimately, in the face of doing a good job, it's laziness or dictionaries, they must choose.

DarrkeThoughts. You are right. It was laziness. One of his group had a dictionary.

Scriber, spellcheck is a good final back-up. Over-reliance on it means that people don't always understand the meanings of words and nor does spellcheck pick up nuances.

The brain is so much faster than the dictionary!  It's just laziness, and you can't blame him for trying.  Hope his cubicle mates are good spellers!

Spelling is important, but not as important as it was before computers and

spell check.

Tigerprincess, you would think so. I also showed them my Strunk & White and recommended that.
