My mother bought me
some furniture that had to be put together and thought we would have a nice mother-son bonding experience assembling it. Knowing we would end up with a scene similar to what you described I wisely vetoed the idea. The furniture has been sitting unassembled in my living room for 2 months. My roommate may take a crack at it--as long as he leaves me out of it that's fine with me.
