I use the basic meaning of the original Hebrew.
King James translators decided that the word for sky was also the word for the heavens -- everything that was up there --
we are lookikng when we look at Gen 1, as a very old document, from a very primitive point of view - - where there basically was only the ground and the sky -- that was all the author saw.
in the rest of Genesis 1 and 2 -- we are viewing through the eyse of an authors who could only see the sun and moon and stars and the "wanderers" - the planets -- all visible with the naked eye from the surface of the earth.
nothing else existed for Old Testament writers.

I have always followed the same belief as Uni...
And that the "heavens" are the universe, not the sky.
There is a passage in the bible somewhere about God creating a firmament(sp?), maybe someone knows exactly where this is? That's what I interpreted to be the sky.

and about that bird thing -- or rabbit or whatever
some things are highly disbelievable -- this one in particular
if Jesus had performed mmiracles at any young age (6 mos - 16 years) then many certainly would recognize him as special --
wouldn't you think a child that turned your friend into a bird was something different from you?
then you'd have to ask
would you be scared of him?
or worship him?
and if his mother scolded him and he got mad -- might he not just as easily turn her into a bird -- or maybe a cow --
so mom and teachers and other adults would have to be very careful around him.
the first miracle is accepted to be the water into wine thing at Cana.

i remember researching Genesis One
the Heavens, as interpreted by 16th Century Anglicanism -- translates more accurately into "the sky" and the Earth, "the ground"
"At the first, the gods formed the sky and the ground."
And of the rest, these were the sun and the moon and the planets that people could see from the surface of the Earth -- all visible and known for millenia before this was written.
it refers to nothing more than we can see with the naked eye today -- almost anywhere since planets in particular are highly visible even in the City.

Maybe. I don't have a "religious" sect, I'm not even "religious"
my interpretation of Scripture comes from what the Holy Spirit leads me to understand. Of course I learned a lot in "seminary" and my Pastoral training as well as my continued learning as well as personal experience.

Uni, do you interpret passages yourself, go by what is taught by your religious sector, or believe it [bible] should be taken literal, as it is read? I'm just curious because there is so much controversey between religions over how this should be done. I wonder if in Gallelio's time, no one saw what you see, because they were only allowed to believe what was dictated to them by the law.

Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the HEAVENS and the earth", if He created everything on the earth i.e., plants, animals, Adam, Eve, then clearly it makes sense that He created ALL the things in the heavens as well.
Genesis 1:14 "let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens.....let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years...." we use planetary alignment for "signs", to declare the "seasons" and as a guide for "days and years".
Genesis 2:1 "Thus the HEAVENS and the earth were completed, and ALL their HOSTS". pretty self explainatory.

maybe it was a rabbit. Its been a long time since I
heared the story. btw, I haven't ruled out life on other planets. I did see something once (not little green men or anything), but it has always left an area of openmindedness on that subject for me.

man was not created to die
he was created to live without any death, but he sinned ( you know the story). therefore all the systems were to be inhabited by man throughout the universe over considerable time. Just a theory.

Actually, there are hundreds and hundreds of passages that are not in the bible that you and I know. Your local Theology library, where most apprentice ministers study, has them on record though. I don't know that they reveal anything about other planets, but its not impossible to think it is in there somewhere. My paster told our congregation of one such story where Jesus, as a child, turned a schoolmate into a bird because he was angry. This mention was to remind us that Jesus was as human as us and shared every emotion, including anger. This story is not in the "bible", but was edited out. Maybe if we could read the
whole thing we might find some mention of other planets.... Just a thought.

gee, I guess you forgot about some verses.
In regards to other planets and such. Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:14, Genesis 2:1 for starters. Maybe there is no mention of ET's because there is none.

That might be because...
The people who wrote the texts of the Bible were just that...people. At that point in time people had no idea of such things...just a guess.
