that's a good question
I've been noticing the "style" of the top 10 blogs lately and I agree, a majority of them are not what I personally would go out of my way to read, but obviously someone is. The more "serious" writers often fall by the way side and are overlooked for those writers who are either writing "silly" stuff, fellow blogger bashing stuff or chat room type of stuff. Go figure.

and anyway, the most clicks doesnt medan the most read, everybody chedecks top blogs out but i guess most leave when they see there not interesting xoxoxoxoxoxox
what makes a blogger popular, loyal readers and girl you have them :)

I have a lot of posts ranked in the 300's and 400's it's fun to try to get them to say 200..the effort to get to #1 would probably take ten years off my life....haha

I do the same thing...I read my favorites...and then I randomly look for post that might set me back a day or too...either in tears or laughter.

I guess I'm charming!
That and I read alot of people's stuff. I won't always comment. But I'll read it. I'd like to think they read mine because it's a fun read. It is in the humor section and I don't post jokes I've read or funny pictures. I actually write about things I see or feel. Oh well. It does say by popularity next to ranking.... I just hope people don't overlook what I have to say just because I am in a top ranking.

Perhaps to be fair to Anna...it would depend on the category to which a blogger is in the top spot...I've seen some very good writing in the fiction section ranks 1-10.
But ultimately I believe popularity ranks higher than creativity. This rule applies to real life too.
Ex.) There are so many talented singers in the world, but Lindsay Lohan is popular so that makes her a pop sensation...meanwhile there is a girl at the train station that belts it out like Billie Holiday and she's collecting gum wrappers and spare change.

And here's why I'll never be in the top 10:
"Top bloggers exude charm, have something interesting to say, and are often popular." - I'd say this is summed up by saying "kissing ass," which I refuse to do.
"A right combination of wit, charm, and za za zu go into making a blogger number one." - I think I'm a little too offbeat for people.
"You have to be friendly. You have to read other peoples' smack." - Again, I'm friendly, but I don't kiss ass.
"Sometimes waging a war with another blogger with boost you to the top hot spot." - I keep myself out of these conflicts on principle.
"Sometimes just asking an intriguing question will do the trick. Although silly questions work just as well." - Sometimes this works for me, but mostly it has to be about sex or politics, and there's only so much of that I can discuss without getting bored.
"Bloggers have busy lives...they are looking for the quick fix...the first guilty pleasure that comes to mind." - Again, sex.
I think I'm somewhere in between 12-21 (in fact, I think a few of my blogs are in there), so I'll take that as a compliment. :-)
