Firstly, its little ms (mizz). Just wanted to clarify that....

And secondly, your name king my or king me for pronunciation?

And thirdly, this actually related to your post...

It is a difficult situation to be in and it is of course better to stick to set times and plans so as not to throw too much at the students at once. Maybe eminem is too much to start with. But finding out what your students are interested in and what makes them tick has got to help in some way.

If they are brand new, what is it that motivates them? How long are the pieces you are doing? What other features of language are you trying to get across. Perhaps a recipe is an idea? Or a piece of writing from a person newly arrived in America - the trials and tribulations of a newly arrived? Or maybe go into history, the climate, or a tourist guide to your local area.

Good luck.

LittleM's, I thank you, and I agree.
However, I'm a tad conflicted over it.  One of the issues I have with regular ESL methodology is the frequency of topic (or skills, strategies, subject, curriculum) change that children who are going through levels one, two, or three of culture shock have to endure.  The reason I have had success I believe is that I have started one thing, snd stuck to it for weeks.  Like a 6 week geography lesson, we just finished.  Like my 6 week journal writing session I always begin after the winter break.  Fractions for 6 weeks.  Re-telling stories -- 6 weeks.  Dictation, 6.  I hesitate to stop and explain the nuances, moral, legal, counter-culture, etc. of emenem.  These are Neewcomers by the way.  Thanks for the note!

That was a great suggestion from Ca88andra. Let us know how it goes.

Ca88ie,
Thanks for the stop-n-chat.  Hey your suggestion sounds right on.  I do have some emenem articles I pulled from his websight, or someone's.  I think I'll give it a try.  I have been using dry rules-responsibility- related sentences.  But I'm really interested in continuing the dictation, so I think I'll follow up on that suggestion.  Thanks again!

With the dictation (and anything else really) have you thought of using sentences or articles that catch their attention and that they can relate to such as the words to Eminem or other rap songs, advertising material, articles from ezines to do with youth culture... Maybe if they are really interested they will comply better.
