Meringue, we are trying to start all over again.
There are only three of us this time around. You would be number four. I'll email you some stuff later today.

No problem Talion.....

Should we postpone for a week or put Kay-Ren in front of you? I've done an update.

I haven't forgotten you or this great idea. There's a lot going on right now and I haven't been able to devote the time necessary. In a little over a week, things will get back to normal for me and I'll be back in the swing of things. Again, I'm not ignoring you and I'm sorry if it appeared that way.

Thanks for stopping by Ukie.

200 words or less might be possible, but not a promise.  Let me know if you are interested.

I'll take the 200 words or less group.

word
I was just going to post the same thought as Whim.  A chapter of a book can be up to 3,000 or more words and is a bit too much to crit all at once.  But, as the point has already been made, I'll withdraw quietly

posted by johnmacnab on November 17, 2004 at 11:50 AM | link to this | reply

Thanks Whim...

Shorter pieces is something I'll agree with - we don't want this to become burdensome.  Thanks again, we'll take all the help we can get.

Couple of things
  1. Thanks for the invite.
  2. Depending on the writing, 2500 to 3000 can be a hefty chunk to thoroughly critique.  Times that by two and you might end up spending all your writing time critiquing.  I'd recommend going smaller at least in the beginning, especially with the holidays coming up.  It will also allow everyone to grow comfortable with the process and the style of individual reviewers before frustration sets it.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time until after the holidays to commit to this group.  However, I would be willing to do what I can to help out and forego my right to critques until such time as I can pull my full share, if you find you need another body.

About time Kay-Ren....
I was thinking that if we had all the ideas together this week, we could go next week, but we'll see how it goes.  Don't know how likely it is that we will have everything in place by weekend. If we don't, week after next will work just as well.  You did a review for me that was quite helpful. Would you think about some kind of format? Thanks.

posted by word.smith on November 16, 2004 at 5:46 PM | link to this | reply

Kay-Ren, think positive....
There is no if. It is when.   The group is now 7, including you. If that's what we have, that's what we'll go with.  Six different views of a story/article should be more than enough diversity for the writer. I should probably incorporate all these ideas into this Blog, repost it and we make decisions based on that. Talion should come in soon with additional ideas and/or comments.  Love the idea about using Word.  That should work well. I've been mulling this over for a while Kay-Ren, but  kudos should go to  you. It was your original idea, after all.

Count me in please. I've got a couple of different stories that have been rejected and could use a bit of help. When I've done critiques for people I cut and paste the work into Word, then I place my suggestions and comments in parathasis as I read. I will also write what I think of the story and what I feel may improve it at the end. Then I send the whole thing back to the person. I don't offer to do this much and I've only had a couple of people critique my work in the same way. If we could get a regular thing going on here I'd love to be a part of it!

I am Interested (corrections)
I am tired

I just joined Blogging Network yesterday. But I have been looking for a workshop group for sometime. I have participated in writers' workshops in the past. If you have a space open I would love to join! Please, email me if you have space. Email: csclark@uwm.edu

Thanks John, pat on the back accepted.
When the idea first surfaced,  I thought about email but because of the network situation, opted to post to a Blog, however, if that is what you prefer to do, when it's your turn you are free to send your work via email rather than posting it here. In fact, any of us who prefer to do so, should. as throwing caution to the wind is not exactly the wisest course and does not make for peace of mind. I understand your concern what with the eminent people now being charged with plagiarism. To post your future best seller would be like putting cheese in full view of hungry rats.

Hi Boss Woman
Can I say straight away that I am truly impressed with the amount of effort you are putting into this circle. Please accept a pat on the back. Question? If we are critiquing items to be published, should we be posting them on this blog? I would like parts of my book (still to be written), to be critiqued and I don't fancy the work being open to the world. Imagine the book being a best seller under somebody else's name. Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh.

Excellent.

I have a worse week cut out for me than expected, so it might be a day or two before I can follow-up again myself. Please feel free to e-mail me with updates, etc. if you need to.

Again, I’m perfectly comfortable with however the group would like to arrange things. I’ll be happy to participate as long as it doesn’t threaten to kill me.

A possible workaround for posting elsewhere might be to include the links to a writer’s post here so they are connected to one another. This way, the writer can share the benefit of interest with you as works are completed for critique. But, I really don’t mind either way - I’ll be involved if I can regardless.

Be well for now, and good luck with this! You’re really stepping up to the plate here.

Incky,

Sure, in terms of  setting limits - a word count would be useful. I thought about looking at  a chapter at a time if it's a book that's being written.  I don't think any of us would be happy to spend hours going through endless pages of stuff. I imagine we're all pressed timewise.

Posting to your own Blog could work just as well.  I'd play devil's advocate here and say that it would be easier to have what is being done in one Blog so that other folks outside of the group, if they are intersted, can see what progress we are making as a group and what we've covered. Could posting to both places work? I guess we can agree on this within a week or so.

If it is felt  that doing 2 reviews per week is too much, we can look at doing just 1. I am very flexible with this and just want to see us get something underway.

In terms of the numbers of people, the ones listed on the Blog Page are interested. BB will help, but on a limited basis. I am glad to see that we have some level of interest. Thanks as well for helping to make this work.

If by the end of the day, I haven't heard from the other three persons, I'll drop a quick email, so they can come have a look see and eventually tell what they think of these ideas.

I’ll have to print this out and read it over again.

The only thing I have to write right now is that I would like there to be a maximum word count. I wouldn’t have the time to pour over page after page of someone’s writing. 2500 - 3500 word max, perhaps . . .something like that.

Also, you don’t think it would be a good idea to allow us to post the actual text in a blog of our own? We could always add "Crit Review" or something to that effect when posting. Then we could use this blog as the meeting ground on crits and responses.

Just a couple thoughts on my first read through. I’m willing to do anything as long as it doesn’t kill me too much on time. No matter what the group decides, if we have four or more people in - I’m in too.

I’ll read everything you’ve done over for tomorrow and either comment here again or e-mail you.

Thank you very much for putting all this effort into it. You’ve done a great job so far!!
