Good comparison.  Another way in which the Romans were like us in wealth was one of natural resources.  Only the US has had unspoiled resoources such as the Romans found!  I think, however, that our futures will be different in longevity, for our planning ability, for our attempts to monitor the self-gratification of our leaders and citizenry, and our system of checks and balances.  This is what we know as progress!  Good post and thanks for writing!
