sannhet -- poverty and a bit of bad luck mostly

After being completely snowed in we ran out of firewood. Nearest help was a distance away but they were snowed in as well. First night wasn't so bad, this took place on the second night after we had burned everything that was loose. Phone books, newspaper, cereal boxes and some wood trim we stripped from the walls. ( landlord hated that part ) Third day help arrived and dug us out. Learned our lesson however. Now I have gas heat, a wood burning fireplace, with plenty of wood and a butane camping stove just in case.

How the heck did you get in that predicament?

sannhet -- for some the state of higher being comes differently

in my case I was dying of exposure. -40 degrees outside and extremely cold inside, with the likelyhood of living until morning becoming increasingly slim. When the human body freezes to death the first thing that goes are all of the motor skills, one is rendered completely motionless. The next thing that happens is uncontrollable motor reflexes take over, naturally shivering from head to toe. Soon the body begins to make it's own decisions in that eyelids can no longer be opened as a mechanism to stop heat loss from the eyes. Shivering is subconsciously deemed the expendature of too much energy and ceases. At this point you have about 1 hour of life left. When one reaches this point there is nothing left but internal will. One has to reach deep down inside one's self to force the inner being to radiate heat outwards from the deepest recesses of one's chest cavity and brain. You must force your mind to take over and save your body or you will die.

I had the sniffles the next day.
