I agree that we can accept payment
for certain things, but when we are making amends, then our payment is our own recovery.

Thanks you for your comments on responsibility.

Well said, but a couple of minor points...

The starting point is recognising the difference between responsibility for and responsibility to.

We are each responsible for what we do, what we say, even what we think and feel. But especially for our reactions in any situation. That includes our "happiness" and our expectations from others.

We are each responsible to others, when we make promises or commitments that they may or may not rely on.

Concommitant to these, there are things we are not responsible for - like other people's happiness, what they do (unless we assume that in our responsibility to, as when we manage their efforts). We are not even responsible for what they expect from us (unless we made a commitment, part of our responibility to ).

As for doing something for others, that's fine. No, we should NOT expect to be paid or appreciated, but if payment (in kind or cash) is offered, then we should accept it with good grace. It is not selfish to accept a reward for doing something for someone else. The payment might be part of the needs of the person offering it.  That's part of the cycle. However, that said, we should allow for people to "pay it forward", either in kind or making a donation to an indicated charity.
