you are powerless over your first drink--its just that now that I've been sober a while and want to stay that way, I am able to use common sense. The first few years, if there was alcohol in the house, I would have gotten drunk a few times.

There's one thing you aren't powerless over,
and that's picking up the first drink. Never forget that - you do have a choice as to whether to pick up that first drink, sip, or taste of alcohol. You may be powerless over your behavior if you pick up the first drink and get drunk, but it is your choice to pick up alcohol, or fruit juice, coffee, or mineral water. Whether you know it or not, by sniffing glasses to see if the odor or taste of alcohol is there, you are somehow recognizing that you have the power and that the alcohol flavor in that glass of mineral water might just send you on a bender. God gave you a brain and you use it every time you choose not to flavor your mineral water with your husband's wine.
