Good question, Editormum
It's like the frog in the boiling water - sometimes we don't know what we're getting into until it's too late.

They say there is love at first sight...
I've never found that to be true... you are right about abusing relationship. The abuser do rush you, and when you finally open your eyes, it's sometimes too late.  I think 90% of women have experience abuse one way or another. Verbal or physical. Good post.

IT would be interesting to hear your perspective ...
...on the question "Is it love or is it enabling?" I find that too many of us, myself included, become victims because we duck the responsibility of confronting antisocial and harmful behaviour, make excuses for the abuser's behaviour, etc.
