I think I would
be more worried about the girls than the coaches and parents. And about asking for them to bear with you, I would re-think that. I coached, umpired and participated in fast pitch sofball why stationed with the Army in Germany. One summer another coach and myself formed a team fro some of the wifes stationed there. They played the girls teams in slow pitch. Tlak about fun. Here you had moms playing against daughters it was a laugh a minute, and the moms seldom lost.
If you give them an indication that you might not know what you're doing they will be all over everything you do. Best bet is to go in and take control of the game like you've been doing it forever. If there is a problem, you can't back down. You are the one in charge if you let them start to take control them they will make it miserable for you. Even the major league umps are going to make a blatant mistake, ocassionally, but you don't see them back away from it. Parents and coaches can be like sharks if they sense a little blood they are going to try and eat you. It's their job to coach and cheer, it's your's to umpire the game, and if necessary remind them of that. Funny you wouldn't think a girls softball game could put pressure on someone, but I know where you are coming from. I've also coached and refereed kids soccer, and umpired little league, and I think the guys in the majors take less abuse sometimes. Lots of luck in the work area, will be checking back to see how things are progessing.
