There's even a term for it
It's called "gallows humor." I hear it all the time around hospitals - surgeons tend to disguise that humor around the patients in the belief that patients and their families would be horrified (and unfortunately, sometimes that assessment is right). But surgeons and nurses especially need that type of humor to cope, and every once in a while I find it helpful as well.

I don't either...
Sometimes we just have to laugh though. It eases the pressure and strain on us all. Jokes are made about every traumatic event: both shuttle explosions, Dahmer, Waco, etc. It's the world's way of coping with something that is difficult to deal with and/or believe is happening.
