Reporters would get critisized...
if they didn't ask those questions. They have to ask on the chance however slim, that the criminal might confess. That would be a heck of a story.

What reporters expect when they ask the obvious question
is not exactly a full confession. What they are hoping for is that glimpse of telling emotion before the subject can school his face to a more acceptable appearance.
What I hate is when reporters shove the microphone into the face of the person in shock, who has just lost (the house, a child, the life savings, the entire family) in some catastrophe or other and ask them, "How does it feel?" I don't need to see it, nor does the subject need to tell it at that moment.
