Sexing Up Old Yeller

This is a shorter post today than my writings have been of late but maybe it will lead some reader down the path toward a $1 million. I've been on flickr for a couple of years now and in that time have had about 1,100 views for 117 photographs. Several people have marked specific photos of mine as a... Sign in to see full entry.

River Bio - A Photo Essay

It began somewhere over the Cumberland. That perfect blend of all things Southern, for me, it was all things Tennessee. Sitting in a blue Cheverolet pickup truck between my granny and papa. The dashboard lights shone green and the tires made that ripping sound as we hit the deck plates where the... Sign in to see full entry.

The Fish Artist

The Fish Artist Halfway through the original draft of A Field Guide I got excited and started looking for an illustrator. I went on craigslist like people do when they want to find quality work at low prices. I didn’t have any money to offer so I offered half authorship for the best artist I could... It's Sauger Time In Tennessee

It’s sauger time in Tennessee. And when you’re after sauger there’s no better place to go than the Cordell Hull Dam in Carthage, Tennessee. At least that’s what the host with the radio voice said on my Tennessee’s Wild Side the other morning. They sent one of their “wild side guides” out with an... Sign in to see full entry.

Get out your violins and cheese...and bring me a beer while your at it

Well, yes sir, there it is. I’ve been down with some three week long crud that most of middle Tennessee seems to have come down with but since New Years Day I’ve been improving and am almost back to 100%. This morning I went for a run which would be great except the fact that I have time for a run.... Sign in to see full entry.

Farewell My Subaru, Good Riddance December

Today is grey and windy but warmer, mid-50’s. Its good after mostly below normal temperatures for the past six weeks. Seems like we’ll have days of highs not above 40 then a warm front and rain followed by a day in the 30’s, gradually warming back up to repeat the cycle. I try to get through it all.... Arrowhead (a poem)

Arrowhead, Tucked between two remote controls (pieces of plastic that control my evenings and some peoples’ lives) you look so out of place: Chipped flint, cutting edges with a rounded heart. Relic of the earth when man was a child of the dirt and trees and running water. Were you a product of war... Sign in to see full entry.

Let Me Tell You How to Make Something Good

Alright, this was an impromptu dish but turned out pretty good: Brown ground beef and onions in olive oil. Add a bunch of cumin, shake the hell out of the bottle. Add some cayenne pepper flakes...shake it till your nose burns. Drain Greece then add a can of rotel and a can of drained red kidney... Sign in to see full entry.

The Battle of Franklin and Thoughts on the Civil War

In 1830 Fountain Branch Carter built a modest brick home on the outskirts of the young village of Franklin, Tennessee. With the help of three sons, the sweat of slaves, and the fertile ground of the Harpeth River watershed he built a prosperous cotton farm. On the afternoon of November 30, 1864 all... Notes From Transcendental Heros

29 October 2008 “I learned this at least by my experiment, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams & endeavors to live the life which he has imagined he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” – Thoreau No truer words were ever spoken or written. Even in the... Sign in to see full entry.
